YOUR 6X6 CAN INJURE YOU SEVERELY

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Sep 08, 2013 4:39 am

When backing up your 6X6 on steep grades with surfaces that have loose rocks or uneven traction that can allow traction on the front wheels and not all of the rear wheels, it is best to keep your thumbs on the outside edge of the steering wheel and not where the spokes can suddenly grab your thumbs and break them. It happens faster than you can react.
There is a long history of 6X6 drivers who have been injured in this manner.

Halftracks require the same precaution.

It's all in the transfer case just like the M35 M800 and M900 series trucks it tells you not to use your transfer in low range when backing it will brake the gears or in a lot of cases it will bust the case the 800 and 900 5 tons are good at that I have changed many because some dummy private cant read the warning plate right in front of them

The "thumbs out" rule applies to off road driving in general.
I teach it to teenagers learning the basics of 4WD-ing.

In '91 I watched my only truck driver MOS private destroy her 900 series tractor transfer case in just this manner -- reverse in low gear. She failed to remember the warning on the dash. Never a good thing to happen, particularly when your moving out in preparation for a ground war.

A jeep starting handle can also give you a nasty kick if you dont hold it right.

The 2-1/2 Ton and larger 6X6 Steering wheel Kick Back will guarantee painful injury, broken thumb can be expected.
4X4 Chev. has the potential also.

Good reminder.

I used to have a 4x4 pickup with manual steering that I would take off road. That steering wheel could really start spinning if you caught a rut. It's spokes would do quite a number on any errant digits that inadvertently got in the way.

Every once in awhile I will catch myself grabbing for one of the spokes when I am driving my CCKW and IMMEDIATELY put my hand back on the outside of the rim. Would always prefer nothing bruised or broken...

Best Regards...

The 5 Ton 6X6 Gasser Power steering system could spin on its own if the steering unit was out of adjustment.
