It will be interesting to figure out the origin of the 4X4 Studebaker.

read your post and just happen to see this truck for sale on ebay, not mine and don't know the seller and I am not connected with selling it, just shows more pictures. I'm thinking somebody home built this one! Notice LVT in background...

With that thinking in mind why did they build my 1944 Federal 2G it's a 4x2 and has a yard and a half dump bed.
They gave it tactical front sheet metal and a JXD with a 5-speed OD transmission.
Not a truck for rough terrain or heavy loads. But they built it anyhow. And the Army bought it even if in small numbers.
And as you say they had plenty of 1.5 ton trucks.

And the 2G was standarized, put into series production and assigned G-539.

Joel my point was in your earlier comment you made it seem like you’re asking us why would the US build another 1.5 ton vehicle but then you recognize they did and standardized it as in the case of my F2G.
The truth is there were a many 1.5 ton vehicles in the inventory made by several manufacturers including those in there civilian skin.
With that in mind why did they build the F2G, as well as the many medium duty Internationals, Diamond T's and even Fords and Chevy's, and then could not have built a Studebaker 4x4. I am interested in the pedigree of the US4 as much as anyone but I will wait till the pictures of the rear frame and springs are posted. There are many "bobbed" trucks out there and the owners usually will tell you so themselves.
I am sure that info is available if it’s so. But I am not going to ask about the G number when we don't even know the pedigree of this truck.
Maybe Studebaker built a couple 4x4’s or even a few more as a study and if so it was never standardized or even went further than a parking lot or test track in South Bend. I have learned anything is possible when you are talking MV's from the 1940's. Case in point my F2G and the couple of low silhouette Dodge WC trucks out there still.

My two cents

In the 70 years since WWII started there has not been one hint of a Studebaker 4X4 truck such as this. This should tell you something. Apparantly the Army had a need for a fleet of light duty 4X2 Dump trucks with a parts commonality for construction projects at military posts. The 2G's showed up unused new in quantity in the mid 50's.

Not to throw fuel on the fire, but...

It seems this is NOT a new idea, and may not be of US origin.

I still think it is a concoction, it has M-Series Reo 9" wheels w/9.00 X 20'a and the stake pockets have been vented. Would like to see details of rear spring to axle set up, transfer case and how it is attached to chassis along with interior cab details.

There is nothing wrong with running Later rims and surplus tires. Thats what I am going to do on my International M-5H-6 because the original rims are a little toasty and the M35 rims are $1000 for 10 with 90's dated 90% Firestone rubber and the rims are late 1980's Firestones Accu-Ride as well.
You ever priced 11ea. 8.25x20 tires it costs more than a quality rebuild of a Red Diamond motor when you add tubes, flaps and shipping from Texas to California your looking at $4500. I would guess you will see lots of WW2 iron running surplus rubber till it runs out. Speacially on the west coast where you can get a good tire and rust free rim for $100 from the guys buying trucks for parts from GL.
Running straight super clean 20 year old rims versus 68 year old crusty and pitted rims down the road is more my speed.
The 825x20 tires say STA on them and are 12 ply. Great for a halftrack when you only need three and don't care if they say made by the Chicom.

STA is a made-in-USA tire.
