Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
. . . so, I cleaned it all to see what I had. it has all been repaired before. The pin is 1/2" diameter, so I made a couple of replacements from mild steel.
Painted the drive, which, incidentally, has a rubber dampener section similar to a harmonic balancer on the front of a car engine, and fitted it all back together without much trouble at all.
All done and working fine.
Sam.

Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
Hi all,
Do you think this is correct?
I went to a local tender centre, as I often do, and saw this hacksaw. I thought it might be period correct but could not remember any pictures well enough to know. So not wanting to put money into a wild goose chase, I bid the reserve. Very little.
When I got home, I checked the M1A1 manual and the saw appeared identical.
I now wish I had bid a lot more. But no one else was interested. So I got it.
Here is the listing in the Manual.
. . . and close up of the handle.
I am pretty pleased about that.
Anybody got a picture of this listing in a period manual?
Have a nice day. Sam.

Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
It took a while to find this thread, back on page 7.
Anyway, I made a discovery which may not be news to you.
The front winch on the M1A1 (kw573, anyway) is the same as on the Diamond T 969. Model 3U-615
However, the 969 drive is on the drivers side and the M1A1 is on the passenger side. So, it would be a mechanical 'musical chairs' to convert one to the other, I'm told. Never done it, but may need to in the future.
This was a good find to me as the 969 winches are more common than the M1A1 winches.
Have a nice day.

Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
Hi all,
I preparation for the local bi-annual MV rally, I decided to finally complete the fin repair I had started on my M1A1 Heavy Wrecker siren.
The fin was broken right off. So I purchased a 2mm (sic) end mill and milled a couple of slots that extended from the original ends of the broken fin.
Then rough cut and hammered a piece of aluminum plate into the slots. BTW, the housing is aluminum.
It was very firm and I did not see the need to glue it as I originally intended.
Then simply filed it inside and out to match the other fins. If the housing was not so corroded, it would be very difficult to pick the finished and painted fin.
Once the slots were milled, it was pretty simple really.
Enjoy.

Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
Hi all,
Some time back, I made a reproduction Welding tool box for my M1A1. It is the tool box on the top of the crane tower.
Thanks to John G for the sizes and detailed pictures. This was the last toolbox I needed.
I have made a mistake. Can you pick it?
And here are a couple of the tools I have managed to collect so far.
The oxy gear is Harris-Calorific and the lanterns are Delta (careful, there are several similar types!).
The lantern on the left is NOS and was how I worked out what brand to look for.
Enjoy.

Sam;
I was bit concerned, I thought something major had happened down under, then I realized you had bumped your rear axle topic thread. All is well in the G116 wrecker universe.

Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
Hi John,
Sorry about that. All is well. Jack was asking about 969 diffs, and it was a lot easier to bump this thread than to try to tell him where it was, back on page 12 or something!
But, there are some murmurings M1A1-wise down-under. Hopefully more news before February.
Email pending.
Seasons greetings.
Sam.

Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
Hi, can anyone help please,
I have a WW2 willys jeep which is modelled on VIXEN TOR General Gerhardt jeep from 29th Infantry. On the front wing he has a M1A1 Siren ( I THINK ? ) with red light.
Please can anyone tell where i could get one I have attached a photo of General Gerhardt WW2 Jeep.
Thank you for your help on this.
Tim.

Re: M1 / M1A1 Heavy Wreckers and Accessories
Hi Tim,
It is a little difficult to see, but it sure looks like an M1A1 siren. The M26 tank transporter used them as well, I believe.
The mount on the fender is tipped a bit, presumably to clear the hood being opened. Goes to show that anything was put anywhere in the field!!!
Not being in USA, I had to get mine via ebay. Not a cheap exercise. The last time I looked, they were bringing around US$500! As I have the rear part of one spare, I once bid on a bare 'projector'/light, but it went to US$150.
There is/was a web site called 'sirenman', but I have not found one there.
They are a Sterling 'Sirenlite Jnr' (the 'Jnr' probably means 6v), large, heavy and very loud!
Let's know how you go.
Good luck.
Sam, downunder.
