Chevy dump bodies
Greetings guys!
My Chevy book project is ALMOST wrapped up - just tying a few nagging ends up.
This time, I would like to hear from folks that have original dump trucks - letting me know the data on the dump body data plate (or at a minimum, the make of body) - and also the serial prefix of their truck (YP, ZP, NH, NL).
Any help appreciated!
Sincerely,
David Doyle

Re: Chevy dump bodies
Here in Maine during the post war 40's-50's, many of the chicken farmers bought NOS surplus Chevrolet 4X4 Dump bodies to install on the 4X4 G-506 and other trucks, They were used to haul chicken manure (AKA Chicken Dressing).

Hi David,
really looking forward to the book release!
There are an estimated nine Chevy dumps here in the UK, and I think most (if not all) are Hercules. I believe Heil and Perfection also made them?

Re: Chevy dump bodies
Hello David,
I have three Chevy dumps. One 1941 and two 1942's. All have Hercules dump bodies. The 41' is a Z model, one 42" has no data plate inside cab, I have not done much part's identification to determine the month it was produced. That truck came from a local college where they got it from surplus. Not many people left at the college that remember the truck. It was used as a grounds maintenance truck. The last dump has a brass data plate that looks like it has never been out of the truck (until I took it out in fear of it coming up missing) and reads "Nomenclature Truck 1 1/2 ton 4x4 Dump. Next line: Supply Arm or Service Maintaining Truck. Next line: Ordnance Dept. Next line: Make and Model Chevrolet - 1942- G7116. Next line: Serial number, No serial number is stamped in it. No Contract number is stamped in it. And last, no Date of Delivery is stamped in it. I believe it is the original plate. The truck is now titled in my name and was titled from the engine #. BV66xxxx. When I got the truck it came with the original title from Gov. Surplus Property and was titled by the BV engine #. It also came with the original Bill of Sale from Gov Surplus Property dated 1956 and was surplussed to a Washington School. The Engine in the truck now is the original engine and still matches the title. The people I got the truck from was on the school board and bought it from the school when they surplussed it in the early 80's. He remembered the school getting it from Gov surplus and went to Olympia, WA to pick it up. He said they did not use it much and never did anything to it. It still has markings stenciled on the front bumper from when the school got it from Gov Surplus Property after the war. A very original truck. I'm not sure what to think about it though. Why did it not go to support the war and why was no Serial # stamped in the data plate. Don't know if this helps or not.
Brian

Re: Chevy dump bodies
Hi Brian,
Thank you for the info.
Do any of your trucks have their original data plate on the dump bed? If so, I would be very interested in the information from those plates.
Best,
David
