Re: Help Identify this before Owner scraps
I'm the wrong guy to look at photos and determine what is what, but from what limited research I have done on military vehicles between the wars, I have found nothing relating to a vehicle like this for military use. It MAY be that the Ford was modified to 4 wheel drive during the war years for some civilian purpose and the blanket statement "for the war" was not intended to mean an actual military vehicle. May be a more elaborate Bubba modification than we are use to seeing, but I'm leaning towards a "doodlebug" type conversion.

I think he's right about the frame, would make a neat project, or save the axles for someone's restoration (woody wagon)

here's a googled '39 Ford
But how about this instead, a Ford converted truck by Marmon-Herrington Company (note the front axle differential looks like the one in the junkyard)
Ft Houston Tx 1939 Life
Note the 39 Ford Tractor wheels (might fit as replacements)
Neat web forum page about some used by Valley Forge Military Academy (converted Fords to Weapons Carriers for their students to haul 75mm AT guns at school) but they don't look 4x4.

Or go the Soviet route and relabel a Ford as a GAZ-61 4x4, 1939. Pict from book of Alain Dupouy, Auto-éditeur : 'Les véhicules tout-terrain N° 12 Tome II'. 1995.

HEY; Grab that chassis! It appears to be a M_H conversion and a fantastic find for a restorer of a rare V8 Ford. M-H made woody wagons in 4x4 also. If you were in the Pacific NW we'd be all over it. Newc

Re: Help Identify this before Owner scraps
Just got a few more pics from owner, no body so do I dont know what it was, not a very heavy frame though. Now in keeping with the owners story, what AWD vehicles were used in WWll, No shifter and t case is kinda small so must be activated at all times.
I did see where they made the woody, also a picture looks very familiar) of what looks to be gaz-61 or similiar stuck at the top of a sand hill,

Re: Help Identify this before Owner scraps
Search Marmon-Hdrington. Looks like a vendor in IN that converted vintage Rofs into all wheel drive. The Ford Data Plae with all wheel drive on it is interesting. Can't find an image like it. This could be a neat little "oak island" smytery, but don't think it's military related.
But, I've been wrong before.

Re: Help Identify this before Owner scraps
Ford used that wheel (16") and hub on cars and 1/2 ton pickups 1936 - 1939. The Ford 9N and 2N tractors 1939 - 1942 -1947 used that same bolt pattern on the front but the wheels were 19" and the hubs did not have any brake surface. Have seen many of those 16" wheels on well used and abused tractors.
That chassis needs to be saved !

SO THAT'S what they are!!
I have an old trailer with those wheels. The axle on it is a steer axle, welded straight ahead.
If someone needs them, let me know.

I passed the info on to a person who wanted the unit. I'm not going to persue the parts at it will involve a 10 hour round trip. If they dont want it maybe they will pass the info on to you.
