G506 Registration Number Decipher?

Post by signsup » Sun Nov 26, 2017 8:15 am

A blessing has been bestowed and I have been able to locate the original hood registration of my 12/42 Chevy. It is:

6nj24 4180 12/42
Reg number: usa 385143

My experience with the GPW is that the first two numbers were the class of vehicle and the third number was the contract number and then a sequential registration number and an S after the number if the vehicle was supressed for radio static interference. But, I cannot find anything on the 1 1/2 ton series registration number decoding.

What does my number, if anything mean. Did all Chevy G506 start with a 3? Did any other vehicles or class of vehicles start with a 3?

Any information gladly appreciated and will be passed on to my local club at the next meeting.

Looky here Rob. Could your 24 be 21 actually? As far as the Reg. No.s, I read in M.V. Magazine a long time ago that the first no. is the weight classification of 1&1/2 ton. I don't remember what the rest was though, sorry. As for the rest of your query, you can see below.

1st digit Assembly plant 1= Flint, MI
2= Tarrytown, NY
3= St Louis, MO
5= Kansas City, KS
6= Oakland, CA
8= Atlanta, GA
9=Norwood, OH
14= Baltimore, MD
20= Los Angeles, CA
21= Janesville, WI
2nd two letters Body Type
(1940-41 model year used Y and Z as prefixes)
NJ= Cargo less winch
NM= Cargo with winch
NH= dump less winch
NL= Dump with winch
NZ= Airfield crash truck NQ= Bomb service truck
NG= Panel truck
4th & 5th digits (before dash) Month of assembly starting with 8/1941
(Model year is from August to July the following year)
8= August 1941
12 = December 1941
1= January 1942
7 = July 1942
Subsequent months are done by adding “12” to the above dates for each year (eg. 36 would be December 1943).
See below for more info
Last 4 digits Production Number All serial numbers run consecutively starting with 1001 in August of each model year.
Example: VIN # 9NH323885 would be a dump truck (less winch) made in Norwood, OH in August 1943 with a production number of 3885

I've seen this chart and if my DOD is 12/43 on the plate, then 12/41 is on the chart as December 41 and add a 12 to my twelve and it would make 14 and matches the December 42 on the plate, so i think is a 24 and not a 21. But it's interesting to see the first digit is the weight class. I'll have to research some WWII images to see what vehicles are all in this class. I'm presuming that if I see a CCKW, it will be a 4 or higher.
I know all the jeeps were a 2 or a 20.

You are right, I was thinking of 24 as where it was built and not month code. 6 is of course Oakland and 24 is in fact Dec. 42. My Chevy was also built in Oakland Ca. She is a 6NJ22.

And, yes, the photos I see on the web indicate that the CCKW class vehicles all start with a 4 in the reg. number. So it appears that the 1/4 ton jeeps were a 2, everything else up to 2 1/2 ton were a 3, which would include 3/4 ton, 1 ton and 1 1/2 ton vehicles, and the 2 1/2 ton trucks were a 4.

And, I think I saw some ambulance photos that started with a 7. So, I'm as confused as usual. Wonder if there is a chart or web site showing what the first digits were on various vehicles.
