Holy Grail found for my Chevy.

Post by D.R.H. » Sat Oct 28, 2017 3:39 pm

Well Gents, I have finally found what is a holy grail to me. I don't know when I had first heard about locking hubs for the front banjo axle, but I wanted a pair when I had. Having been told that they were pretty rare as of 1997, I went on the hunt in a relaxed effort. I saw my first pair in 1998 in San Jose Calif. at the M.V.P.A. Convention. The K-51 was from San Fran. and was wearing really old dark blue paint. The owner had an extra pair that were already spoken for, at a cost of $350.00. Both pair were the 3 twist lever design.
I saw my second pair in 2010, at Tower Park. They were the same design and the owner had a price tag on them that read $750.00. They looked over used and along with the price, I passed on them. I saw a 3rd. pair on Craigslist a few months ago. They were still bolted to a Chevy somewhere in the coastal northern Calif. area. The owner of the truck was pretty nice and accepting of my offer, $250.00 for the pair and drive flanges to replace them. The truck was of the usual out to pasture and ran when parked 20 years ago variety. The owner and I spoke several times, but the trade never came to more than friendly conversation.
Two weeks ago, another Chevy Cab and Chassis came up for sale in my area. I made the same offer to the owner as the Calif. guy, and this guy accepted. These hubs are not the usual military style twist lever hubs. These were made by Warn. I did not have any idea that Warn had produced any for M.V.'s. They are machined aluminum and look to be of decent quality. They are in really great condition inside and out, and work as they should. Here are a few photos for your enjoyment.
Oh yeah, because they are aluminum I was thinking that they may be able to be duplicated............. Anyone have any thoughts?

Warn mfg is in Clackamas, OR still i believe. The Portland/ Oregon City area. That product may still be available or at least supported. Watch what you brush up against. Newc

Great Score Dave!
For someone who actually puts miles on his truck (or is planning to), that is a great addition.
How are the frame repairs coming?

Thanks Jon. The frame repairs are finished, but I am out of steam everyday when I get home from work. Being the only fabricator for 4 crews of 2 glaziers, has me cooked at the end of the day. There had been some internet glitch with the album index that prevented me from uploading photos for over two months. Blackdog, the proprietor of the site was finally able to locate and correct it. Hence, this thread.
Newc, good advice and properly assimilated!!.

Andy, can you count the number of splines inside the hub where it is broached? I don't know much about the Rockwell axles but the W.W. 2 Chevy and Jimmy front banjo axles have 10 splines. Any pics. would be really helpful too.

I removed them from a Rockwell axle that was under a F600 Ford & installed them on my M35A2

That's correct. However, find a forum member to count splines on his M35 hub flanges for you & there you go!
When I get back home I'll look up in the barn & see if I still have a pair of flanges.

I'm not looking for M-35 locking hubs, they won't fit the W.W. 2 Chevy. Hence, I don't need to waste time chasing down an M-35 owner to find out what the spline count is. I can see that your piggy-back on my thread was nothing more than a "# meee tooo" but for a completely different truck. Sooooo, there YOU go.

Good Find, I'd be interested in a set of those for my truck. I kinda wonder if there was enough interest, if Warn would run a batch of them. Probably wishful thinking on my part, given that these are 70+ year old trucks.

I was the one with the 4 lever hubs I sold at the San Jose convention and for not much $. It was stupid of me to sell them but I have since found another set of Warns so it's OK.

Glad you found a set!

I love mine.

Well PARDON MY GLOVE MISTER! PIGGY BACK YOUR THREAD??? I didn't know you owned this place & it was invitation only!
Only reason I even came back was because I found some time & spent it looking for those flanges offa my truck so I could count the splines for you & even went as far as to measure the spline O.D. so you would have all the info available. But when I log on to post the info for you I see I'm not welcome here! PIGGY BACK???
Well maybe some body else will give your smart ass the info you wanted but you won't get it from me.
You have a really nice day Bub!
Andy out.

I don't own this web site Mr. B*tthurt, and you are welcome to go ANYWHERE you want on it. My bad that you can't take a little heat. Perhaps you would do well with arming yourself with a little technical knowledge before opening up about "what you got". You can SAY that you were going to do something and not really do it at all, how does anyone know?!?! That reminds me of an old profound saying, "While I was judging myself by my intentions the World was judging me by my actions". Your comments were nothing more than "I got some too, but for a different truck", and "go find out from the M-35" crowd". My query as to the spline count was merely conversational and out of curiosity. Not necessity.
Also the expression is "Pardon My Wet Glove" if you are going to use it. Looky here; https://forum.wordreference.com/threads ... e.2819312/. Oh and it's not just my ass that's smart Andy. My Brain is really good too.
But I will concede to your superiority and digress, Bub. :) .
