Ideas to support the front end to remove springs
I am going to lift my truck to work on the front springs. I need to remove them. I am looking for a safe way to jack and to support the frame with all the wieght of the truck. I am always concerned about safety and my Chevy is the largest truck I have ever owned. It has a winch on it as well.

Re: Ideas to support the front end to remove springs
Two pair of 5T jack stands on the frame,(that's 20 tons capability there) lift the whole vehicle level, then loosen the front axle and remove with rolling jack. Or pop the bolts out of the spring perches and remove with springs attached (disconnect driveshaft, pitman arm, draglink and center brakeline before either operation)
Alternatively attach winch about 20' up a large oak tree, lift front of truck with winch, remove axle.... Ok, put some bracing under it before removing axle...
Seriously, the Jack stands are easy to obtain locally, and do not cost that much, if you want cheap, you could cut 4x4's or 6x6's and build cribbing, but stack it in a pyrimid configuration so it won't shift. DO NOT USE CINDERBLOCKS.

I bought these. and they were shipped out of there Phoenix, AZ. Location

Expensive, yes, but I have had bad experiences in the past that have resulted in death due to poorly supported equipment
You could also do cribbing, but make sure it is secure and feel free to over engineer the cribbing.
I then made an adjustable axle stand and cradle that I can attach to a jack. the Cradle will allow me to drop the axles and then adjust to allow me to hold the springs in place while I align the pins.

Ironically, I'm pretty sure there's an image in one of the service manuals showing technicians removing the front axle by rolling it out from under the truck. I don't recall how they supported the truck, but whenever I worked on mine I used heavy duty jack stands and they supported the truck well.
Sincerely,
John

Saw the word sleeper and thought straight away that you were not an American. I believe they know the same item as a tie. Is the term 'railway sleeper' used at all in the U.S.?BATMOBILE1 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 25, 2017 1:09 amI asked on of the guys on the forum what he used to support the truck to take the front axle off he said he used railway sleepers.!

Sleepers are ties in U.S. rail road parlence. When I worked for the Union Pacific we always used the term tie.
I am working on a combination of wood blocks and 6 ton jack stands for supporting the Chevy more when I get some blocks cut. Those big jack stands are nice but I just don't have the extra 300 bucks.
BUT First. Is Ton Dienst still owner of Vehicles of Victory ? OR is it still in buissness ? OR new email address? I sent an email to this address: tdienst@vehiclesofvictory.com and never recieved an answer. Been a week tomorrow Nov 16.
