Hi Dave:

My jeep restoration thread is over on The CJ2A Page, here: https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/the- ... 39584.html. Progress has been slow the past two months as, first, I fought a long battle to remove a very stubborn bell crank pin and, second, as the weather warmed up permitting, if not requiring, yard work to keep my neighbors from bringing out their pitchforks. Progress was faster in the warmer winter months when there was less to do elsewhere and disassembly was relatively easy. Slow but steady she blows. Enjoy!
Happy Jeep Trails,

Wow Fred, you guys are really spending a lot of time to get that embossment stamp correct!! Also, I am going to try your method of rivet punching. I have either ground the head off, then punched the remains with a drift and 4lb. sledge, or ground a flat spot on the rivet then drilled and punched. Oh yeah, I need an off road fork lift like you. It'd sure make things a lot easier to throw around :) .

Dave,

Great work on the frame repair. It looks like you will have the frame back to original configuration in short order. I like your gantry crane idea, very clever.

Thanks very much Paul. As soon as the chassis from the cab to the bumperettes is cleaned up real nice and the bed has been installed, that nice gantry crane will be FIREWOOD!! :) How are your trucks coming along? I haven't seen much of them lately, perhaps I have missed your posts. Anyway, have a great day.

Well Gents, another hurdle has been accomplished. After soaking the spare tire carrier in an electrolysis bath for about 7 days, it was time to bend it back into shape and do some work. Here are the photos of the exercise.

I had taken the entire assembly to a shop to have it straightened. It wasn't too badly bent, but I don't have an Oxy./Acet. torch assembly so I was at the mercy of a speed shop in town. They got it straight but something just wasn't right. The Carrier was 2 inches from the mount and catch.

This is after a week in the electrolysis bath, before being straightened.
Image

Here is where I discovered the discrepancy and cut the carrier from the mount.
Image

I removed the mount and catch from the frame section. Then freed both catch lever and mount hinge so they would turn.
Image

I then re-mounted the entire assembly back onto the frame section for fitment and welding.

Ready to begin welding. I ran beads along the sides and across the chamfered edges.

Image

After welding the plate into place, I ran a nice bead into the area above the hinge, under the plate I added then cut the excess off and ground the area smooth..
Image

Now with everything welded back together, it operates as it should.

When I recovered the carrier from the scrap yard, I had several other items that I wanted to purchase. The entire haul cost me $45.00. So, that and about 6 hours of very satisfying labor produced a functioning Spare Tire Carrier. Tomorrow I will attempt fitment on the chassis, weather permitting. Thanks for lookin'. More progress on the way. :)

You are one heck of a ''Back yard" Mechanic, I really like that gantry you built. Is the gas tank in getting re installed between the frame rails and Will the spare tire carrier work with an 8.25x20 tire on it or just 7.50's?

Thanks for the positive words on my gantry. We all need to work smart not hard when we are by ourselves, don't we. :) Jon as for the carrier, I was told an 8.25X20 wont fit in the stowed position. I have seen pictures of Chevy's and Jimmy's with just a bare wheel on the carrier, unfortunately I don't remember where on the internet I saw them.
The gasoline tank on my truck had been cut down to what I am thinking is a 20 gallon tank. The guy who I bought my truck from installed a 1942 civvy tank under the seat. I intend on installing the tank supports and straps into my chassis but haven't made a decision about removing the civvy tank, or installing a selector valve for both fuel tanks.
Rick, I saw a picture of your Chevy on Instagram yesterday and was wondering what you had been up to. Hope all is well with youze guys!!

A little more work was accomplished today Gents. When I bought the truck, the previous owner had welded a small 'locker box' to side of the chassis where the spare tire carrier is located. Before I left Calif. I cut it off with the old reliable round steel knife. The welds were substantial enough that gouges were made by the round knife, in the removal process. Today I am relieved to have been able to run some beads into them and finish cleaning up that area.
First I had to relocate the muffler. It is a garbage installation to begin with so cutting the pipe and moving it didn't bother me one bit. I then turned to........

Here is where the locker box WAS, and the gouges that required welding.
Image

What ever in the world can these grade 8 bolts and poly-lock nuts be for ??? :?
Image

Ooohh, they're for fastening the spare tire carrier assy. to the chassis...... :)
Image
Image
Image

Here is the gasoline tank support that I liberated from 'the pretzel'.
Image

I have about 20 holes of various sizes that need to be welded up and that's next. Until then, keep wrenchin' and thinkin' "Olive Drab".

Looking good Dave. You are really bringing this truck back to a more period correct configuration. Nice save on the tire carrier, I would like to know if an 8.25x20 fits under the bed as I am leaning towards the same configuration. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Hi Gents, it has been a while since I posted any progress on the Old Girl so here are a few tid-bits for your viewing pleasure. Several weeks ago I was trying to figure out the best way to plug all the holes in Emma's chassis. What I used was 5/8" hot rolled steel bar stock. I simply cut it into 1/4' chunks with the steel cutting round knife, drilled all the holes to 5/8", pushed the little discs into place and welded away. Sorry no pics. of this exercise, too boring.
Yesterday's efforts were the removal of the few barnacles from the chassis. The little mounts for the fuel tank support arms had cracked long ago, so the vineyard chose to fab. some triangles with a cutting torch and just weld them to each side of the mounts.
Image

I went to town with the round knife and extricated them Bubber-gussets. I was busy and didn't want to stop to take progress pics., just the end result.
Image

The weld can be seen where I repaired the crack. I suspect that they developed because the fuel tank had been moved outside the chassis.
Image

The two upper rivets had lost their heads, so I welded a small button in place.
Image

Speaking about "losing heads", I was just about to lose mine over all the garbage that was done to the aft end of the chassis. :) . Stay tuned for more guys, thanks for looking.

Dave,

Looking good! Not many cut up frames get reconstructed at a high level of detail, good for you. Even if you don't use the fuel tank in the original position, it would be a good idea to have the brackets mounted and ready...in case you find a decent tank and change your mind.
