NOS Chevy/GMC Cylinder Head ID..M6/G085?

Post by Michael O. » Sat Mar 05, 2016 11:37 am

I've finally got around to carefully opening the wood crate containing this NOS cylinder head. I was told previously that it could be an early Chevy head. I discovered "G-085-36-1xxx" stenciled on the bottom of the crate. Does this mean its exclusively an M6 Bomb Truck head or did other Chevy models use this head? Any estimation on the casting date?

I'm hoping to find out if anyone has any interest in this for their project.

ORD 9 SNL G-85 VOL IV and G-506 in the applicability column for P/No 839409 states 'All'
This would indicate that the cylinder head you have will fit any of the WW2 Chev 4x4, 1-1/2 ton trucks built for the U.S. Government.
( And quite likely others )

Fits 216 C.I.D. of the period, (that means all 40's thru some early 50's Chev. 6 Cyl trucks and cars. also. Nothing's better than a NOS Cylinder Head.

Here's a site I've found useful in the past.

http://1954advance-design.com/Stovebolt ... mbers.html

The casting number on your head appears in the column for both the 216 and 235 engines.

The L 29 3 casting is a date code, which I believe translates to December 29, 1943, but that would need additional verification.

Hope this helps.

Hi Micheal,

According to the SNL G506, this is the early style head, and was superseded by 839883. PM me with a price if your interested in selling...

The reason for the part number change was that initially the head was supplied with guides only whilst later part number replacement heads came with guides, valves, springs and retainers. ORD 9 SNL G-85 VOL IV and G-506 refers.
It seems that this head will fit both 216 (Ben Dover refers) and WW2 235 engines." It will not fit the earlier engines with dome top pistons." (My bit)

10MM they are plentiful. I have G-506 plugs in boxes of 10. Got an original head, too.
