Buying my G506. What advices would you guys give me?

Post by JulioMoc » Wed Oct 22, 2014 4:38 am

Hey guys, I'm just starting here, so I want to thank you all for having me.

I'm buying a G506 (I guess G7107) here in Brazil. Although I'm a WWII enthusiast, collector and researcher for years, this is the first time I'm dealing with a real vehicle from those days. I've seen that there are plenty of owners and specialists here, and maybe some of you could analyze this one and give me hints and thoughts:

-Good vehicle to buy?
-What's the first thing I should restore?
-There's no bed. Should I make one from scratch using blueprints?

The vehicle is still running.

Here are some photos:

Hi Julio,
The frame and especially the front bumper looks clean and straight. The sheet metal also looks to be in very good shape. The transmission looks wrong but if it works go with it for now. If the truck was around here, it would be in my yard by now.
Best,
Kelley

Thanks for the remarks Kelley, you sure made my decision easier! After some days reading threads here, I noticed many things I'll have to fix and find after buying it. The trucks lacks gauges, wipers, internal door handlers, one front bumper hook, data plates, mirrors, and a proper seat. I didn't noticed the transmission issue till now.

The floor is made of wood, right? And what would be your advice about the bed?

Cheers,
Julio

Judging by the front brush guard, and also the gauge cluster, it appears to be an early Y or Z model. Where is the gas tank? How about battery(never mind, just saw it outside the frame, behind the cab)...

Julio,
The floor pan is made of steel, they rot out. Here's a reproduction one on E Bay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FRONT-FLOOR-PAN ... 8f&vxp=mtr
Many of the parts you are looking for are common to 1939 thru '46 Chevy trucks and are readily availabe.
The Body is a different story, they look pretty simple enough to build or have built. None of my trucks came with bodies either. You may consider building a simple wooden "place holder" body until you find an original or build a reproduction..

Yep, I forgot to say that: no fuel tank either. I'll have to find one here. Being an early Y/Z model, can you set a date/place of fabrication?

Thanks,
Julio

Wow thanks Kelley! I guess I won't be able to buy that one on eBay (the seller doesn't ship to Brazil), but the plate doesn't look too hard to replicate. By the way, great tip about the wooden bed.

Julio

I see holes in the glove box door, which I think is where the dataplate(s) were fastened. You might be interested in the maintenance manual that I have on my shutterfly page. I also have drawings for the steel bed, if you decide to go that route in the future.

Yes, I've downloaded the maintenance manual a couple of days ago, after searching the forum (it was your dropbox folder after all :D ). I'm very interested in the bed drawings! Where can I find them?

The bed drawings I did are not posted anywhere online. I seem to recall that another set of drawings were floating around, so I never made mine available.

Julio,

Welcome, and good luck with your "new" Chevy as they are great fun.

It looks to be in relatively good condition but it is missing many of the small parts. I hope there is a box of parts that come with the truck. As stated earlier, many of the cab parts are common to civilian trucks. Finding a bed or spare tire carrier will be difficult.

If the truck is not a "salad" of many vehicles; it looks to be an early N-series truck, I would guess early 1942. There are a myriad of defining features that can help narrow down the time it was built. Unfortunately a trucks this old are often built from multiple trucks so the actual vintage may never be determined. Are there any data plates on the header panel?

Your transfer case levers appear to be from a CCKW. Is the transmission a 4-speed? The engine may be original, carburetor is not.

I have seen this truck before...perhaps you can find the other two wheels that it used to have. It sounds good.

Hey Paul,

Unfortunately, no dataplates that I know of. The seller told me it's a 4-speed transmission. The truck is at another town, I'll go check it personally next week. I'll have a long talk with the seller about the parts. :)

Best,
Julio

Julio, welcome and congratulations on your purchase. Here you will surely find many people that will help you in the task of restoring your Chevy.
The bed you can find in junkyards. The Randal who lives in Curitiba bought one recently. In 2004 I had another Chevy without the bed and bought one in Paraná. Here is a recent photo of my Chevy that is in process of restoration.

Wow Roberto, thanks for showing up! I thought I was lone Brazilian in this Chevy trade! So glad to see this! Beautiful truck you have there, hope mine gets like this soon. If you have a tip on the junkyard business about this bed, please tell me.

How long have you being restoring your truck?

Abraços,
Julio

Julio, there are more collectors Chevrolet throughout Brazil. I'll get you contacts who can help you find the bed. Effective restoration began about 02 years. Unfortunately I can not devote much time to it and sometimes work for a few months. The first step is you search for information on the G503 here and on other sites. Here you will learn a lot. I always used the G503 in restoring my MB and Bantam trailer.
Collect pictures, look books and manuals. List the missing pieces. This planning is very important to avoid re-work and hassles.
