Re: Found another Chevy
Hi Kirk,
Sorry for the minimalist description, from my experience the best way to deal with the steps is to strip everything off and start over. The hat channels were all bent, broken loose and in need of replacement. It's also much easier to flatten and repair the sheet metal without them being in the way. I simply drill thru the spot welds and right thru the cab step, I then plug weld the new hat channels from the top.
The cab step is supported by the front fender and vice/versa and they are both tied to the front cab corner. As time marches on and things loosen up everything fails together.
FYI, I have nearly 2 full days tied up in those cab steps.
I'm going to trace the gas can bracket onto a sheet of paper and mail it to you. These brackets seem to be hard to come by, it would be great if you could post a pdf to share with the G team.

Re: Found another Chevy
I finally dragged my '45 out of it's winter hiding spot and brought it to the shop to get a few things done.
The Toe board supports also needed to be repaired and re installed. I am currently cobbling together a Toe board out of the remains of several junk ones. once the toe board is in the clutch and accelerator pedals with work properly.
It feels good to finally make a little progress.
I really need to get this truck to be self propelled, it's a real hassle dragging it in and out with a fork lift. So far it starts right up and is charging the battery(12V) via a GM 1 wire alternator.
Once it was running i found that my home made water pump adapter plate has a very small leak. The one sold on E bay requires drilling and tapping a hole in the block, I am trying to avoid doing this. we'll have to re visit this and come up with a fix.
I also got the winch PTO installed and now the winch works. The pto shaft was bent and the yokes were junk, Thanks to Mr X stuff I have the correct winch to shaft U joint assy. I was able to re use the slip yoke and had some woodruf slots cut in a piece of 1-1/4'' round bar to make a new shaft.
Last fall I made a pair of front cab corner and just finally managed to get them installed on the truck.

Re: Found another Chevy
Thanks Guys,
Snuk out of the house real early this morning to go mess around with my toe board....
Most of the threaded inserts needed replacement and the best of my toe board collection was anything but flat. I added some 1/8'' x 2'' strips across the bottom and sides the stiffin it up. The threaded insert directly behind the motor was also messed up requiring replacement. Here's the bottom side of it.... Here it is installed, the clutch works great, I still need to rig up the throttle linkage. The winch leaver mount also needs more work. Attention....
To anyone who's messing around using grinders, Please consider getting yourself one of these.....

I would highly recommend it, you only get 2 eyes. I have no connection with the seller of this or any other brand of full face shield, I just think it's a great idea to wear one.

BWAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA Jon!! I love the link to the face shield. My 7th grade shop teacher, Mr. MacClain always said, "God gave you one pair of eyes to use for the rest of your life, they can not be replaced so take good care of them by wearing safety gear"!!! I always wear safety glasses and a H.E.P.A. half face respirator when using cut-off and grinding wheels, and knotted wire wheels too. Thank you for the kind concern and reminder about safety first.
Great looking toe board by the way. You are doing great.

Re: Found another Chevy
Jon,
Nice to see your 45 coming out of its secret undisclosed location. Looking real good! She should be moving under her own power very shortly now that you are getting the toe board installed. Welding projects that seem to take you an afternoon take me days...you have a great skill.
It is odd to me that GM used such thin sheet metal on the floor toe board (18-20 ga) as that part is responsible for the proper function of both the brake and clutch pedals. The open cab CCKW's use a much stouter toe board, I think they are 16 ga. However; Once the toe board and floor board are installed together they seem to have a pretty sound structure.

Re: Found another Chevy
Thanks Guys,
The toe board provides the return stops for the clutch and brake pedals,it also provides a foundation for the gas pedal. If that's not enough it also supports to floor pan. That's a big job for such a flimsy piece of sheet metal. Years of muddy boots and standing water really do a job on this important component, without it in place you can't drive the truck. The next item I'd like to get functioning is the throttle linkage. The whole system needs a good going thru, nothing fits or line up with the replacement motor and carb.
I sure would like it to be self propelled soon, we will see how it goes.
Some of my repairs go quickly, some take a while, like mounting the winch and all it's related sub assemblies, that was a load of work and still has a few loose ends to deal with it was nice to see it turn under power.

Re: Found another Chevy
Hooking up the gas pedal became a bit of a task, the rods, pivot and pin where all worn out. I found a good used pivot pin on a junk motor out back. The holes in the pivot were all egged out, I ended up making a robust new one that is perfectly suited to deal with my punishing lead foot.

Re: Found another Chevy
Jon,
Your pivot and linkage look awesome. GM certainly didn't accommodate for much working space between the pivot pin and exhaust manifold did they? So have you fabricated the rest of the throttle linkage to the gas peddle? Sounds like you are real close to driving...be careful of the G-forces with that lead foot!

Re: Found another Chevy
Hi Paul,
Yes you are correct, there's not much room in between the block and the exhaust pipe for the throttle linkage, tough spot to work. The gas pedal is all hooked up and works great.
Feeling the need to see some "Big" progress I moved on to sheet metal. the cowl where the hood hinges attach was a little caved in from age and had extra holes from Bubba "fixing" it. I made
1/8''x 2-1/2''x 3-1/2'' backing plates for under the cowl and then plug welded them in place to stiffen up where the hinges go. I also had new shoulder bolts made for the hinges (sorry, no pic) they are simply 1/4'' bolts with 12-24 threads cut in the shanks, about 3/4'' down from the head. The head also needs to be turned to a 7/16''
round and have a slot for a screw driver cut into it.
Now that the hood is off the floor, it's time for the cab steps, doors and fenders to get bolted on.... Lastly here's the fender i spliced together last fall and Dave's head light buckets. it's great to see this stuff off the floor and on the truck.

Hey "LeadFoot" , things are looking really good, they're coming together very nicely!! And yeah, it is good to see parts going back up where they belong. I have issues with my cowl too. The steel is torn between the hinge and windshield. Keep up the great work Jon!!
P.S. I'm liking them tires too!

Hey Jon,
Must be sheetmetal week. Looks nice and I know it is a great feeling to see "big" things happen. Will post some updates on my "Gert" when I get off my duff and download some images. Glad to see your progress.
