Re: Found another Chevy
Thank you all for the replies and compliments...
Hi Luke,
I'm glad you like the vice install enough use it on your truck, I hope it works out and when you get around to the install, I'd love to see a couple of pics.
Hey Gordon,
Thanks for sharing that flip over trick, once I get the springs and latches all dialed in I'll try it. They probably do twist and should be rotated once in a while.
Greetings Phillip,
That tool you loaned me really helped, thanks!
The Vice install started an Avalanche of light iron tool install on this truck, no stopping now. If she's going to be hanging around my shop, she's going to have to earn her keep.
I would never call myself a Blacksmith but I do have a few Blacksmith "moves" and enjoy playing around with the forge from time to time. The forge and all it's related tooling needs to be dragged outside to use which hinders me from using it. So now it's all going to be attached to this truck and easily driven outside for use. Here's a few progress pic...

Re: Found another Chevy
As long as you are using contemporary US made stuff, and hand-made mounts, that should end up very nice indeed.
An anvil would go nicely with that, not sure about how you would mount it, or if you would just need an anvil-like surface somewhere on the bed.

Thanks Gordon,
Yes, all USA made Gear and yes I do have an Anvil, It's a USA made Fisher-Norris. My Plan was to just strong arm it up on the bed when not in use, I may want re think that plan the little beast is really heavy.

Jealous.
Have a look at the pole and crane on a Pacific M26 that they use to lift the spare wheel. Something like that on the front corner of the bed and you can put those painkillers away.

Man that's a big truck!
Thanks for the idea.
A jib crane like that would work well, something else to think about. Thanks for the idea.

Re: Found another Chevy
what if you built a fold out under the front wheel similar to the vice? You could make a removable larger single post (instead of four legs) and "connect" the anvil to the ground much like a post vice does. The stability of a swing-away and a grounding post should give you all the grunt you need to beat till your shoulder falls off. It wouldn't be close to the fire, but you've already positioned the vice in the prime location! Or put your boxes forward the wheels...

Re: Found another Chevy
All interesting ideas Luke,
The Anvil really needs to be not much more that a half step or pivot away from the fire. The iron cools really fast and needs to be under the Hammer as quickly as possible. You also need full access all around the anvil to get the most out of all different shapes and contours incorporated into it. Believe me when I say Iv'e already beaten that horse to death trying to cook up a "Swiss Army Knife" approach to stowing the anvil. Some sort of Jib crane is probably in the works.
A set of rolls would be nice for sure, but I have what I think is a much more versatile piece of gear I'm preparing to install, stay tuned.

Re: Found another Chevy
Maybe you are looking at this the wrong way. Instead of making the tools to work off the truck, you should make the truck have a more shop truck feel. Have drop down sides to act as a platform, and build steps up to the working deck. Sort of like an MKT trailer. Mount all the equipment so that it stores in the enclosed space and then swings out once the sides are dropped.

Re: Found another Chevy
Cool Trailer Chad,
It reminds me of those campers that have all the bump outs.
Having never had one of those or any sort of box truck, I'm not sure if I'd like working out of it. After about the 20th trip up and down those stairs, I'll bet it gets old though. I know from personal experience climbing up and down off the back of a truck also gets old, fast.
I would really like to get a close look at one of those, thanks for the post.

Re: Found another Chevy
Sorry for the wandering off topic post,
Here's the next piece of gear to get bolted on, It's called a Hossfeld #2 bender. These have been around for a while, I think since before WWII.
Like the Forge and Vice, this thing would be way too high if bolted directly to the bed. I built a swing down mount that also sides past the rear of the bed by 18''.
Here's some progress pics... Here's the one in the shop set up to bend flat bar I've also used it to re arch leaf springs It's an incredibly versatile machine, here's a few recently made parts

Re: Found another Chevy
I haven't posted any progress in a while, the truck is being outfitted as a yard truck/rolling tool box. Most of what I've done doesn't really apply to any kind of restoration theme, it's being set up to work.
Here's the cable rack, It was recycled from another truck. The empty space forward of the welding leads is where the gas cylinders are going to be stored.
Here are more parts bins, a large and a small toolbox. The bins and big rusty black box were pirated from the same truck as the cable rack.
The Forge is 100% finished, I up sized the blower and may rig up an electric one, soon.
I built this adapter plate to install a drivers seat.
I wanted a drivers seat that allows easy access to the storage space under it, so i found one on E Bay that I thought would work. I also wanted it to be adjustable, so I incorporated a pair of M37 seat slides I had into the install.
The seat has several inches of front to back adjustment and also has all sorts of seat height and back adjustments, as well as pivoting up.
We got to use the Hossfeld on Saturday to make parts for a couple of jobs, the truck is earning its keep.Kelley
