Re: 1941 GMC K-18 scr-197 radio truck
I've nearly installed all the wall paneling in the box except the back wall - I finally got the two rear windows installed last night to stop any water intrusion - Now I can finish that wall, Been finishing a lot of small items. Finally got to the windshield frame and glass cut. Will post up some other pics of the interior once I get back on it.

Hi Zout,
Great looking truck you've got there, can't be many of those round.
I'm curious how they transitioned from the windshield frame to the roof on the inside of the truck. could you post a couple of pictures, please? It's pretty amazing how many different styles of truck they made with the same basic cab design.

I'm betting they used the same internal hinge design that the civilian trucks had:

Here is a little update as of current. The windshield crank has been rebuilt and in the mail on the way back. Once this is here I can install the windshield - for now its just sitting there for the pic.
Cannot remember if I posted what this looked like when I got it dropped off March 26th 2014 (yes that date is correct).

Thanks for posting shots. It looks great.
Is your long-term plan to equip this with period-correct radio gear or are you going to keep it open? The advantage to the latter, is you'd have the most awesome camper when you go to MV shows.
John
BTW, I must have looked at these photos for weeks before I realized this is a two-wheel drive truck.

Re: 1941 GMC K-18 scr-197 radio truck
Thanks. The owner is getting radio equipment (scr-197) which were in these units time period correct wether working or not. it surely will not be butchered into a camper while I'm alive.
The k-19 trailers which were the transmitting unit are non-existant as far as we can find out through some tough searches - and almost non-existant information about these K-19's when researching - same ole stuff comes up. We have yet to locate a picture of the interior of the K-18 with how the radio's were set up - there are pics of the k-19 set up. Very little is known about these unit. Sure would like my hands on a TM manual for the K-18.
Anyhow - here are pics of when I went to look at it to get my head wrapped around this project. Just FYI - I can only work a couple hrs a night on this and on the weekends. For almost two weeks I did not work on it - the unit arrived at my house March 26th THIS YEAR fellas - and I am the only one who works on it.

Agreed. I wasn't suggesting modifying it into a camper, but rather having that open space to set up a cot and such. At the local show here, there's a guy who brings his G506 each year with his cot and camping gear in the back. Keeps him off the wet ground and the tarp over him keeps the rain out.

Ahhh Understand now - thx. The owner and I will be up in Louisville for the MVPA show - look for two fellas wearing Tee Shirts with the Front of the k-18 imprinted on the back of the Tee's - very cool. Now if we had a K-19 trailer there would be plenty of room for sleeping.

Indeed. You'd be giving the local Motel 6 a run for the money with that combo.

Re: 1941 GMC K-18 scr-197 radio truck
It was awesome over at the Louisville MVPA this weekend. Thumbs up to all the personnel who made it go off - it was worthwhile heading over there.
I will say it was a pleasure meeting Paul with TM Ordniance paints - all the last 3 units I have tackled have been with his product and I will not use anyone else's for just how nice this stuff turns out - worth the $$$$.
Got back at 3 am Sunday morning and got up early to get back onto building the brush guard and install some goodies found at the MVPA - I expect I have the rest of this week before finishing it - I will be getting it away from the garage and into the mowed powerlines next to my house and take array's of walk around final pics before releasing it to the owner.

Re: 1941 GMC K-18 scr-197 radio truck
Nice work.
Just an observation, but your wiper arms look short. The G506/G508 series of trucks used "grasshopper" arms. There are two variations of those, early arms are straight and later ones are bent at the end. Check out this thread (Scroll down to the photo of the arms): viewtopic.php?f=25&t=175579&start=30
Search ebay using "grasshopper wiper" and you'll see some for sale. (Check your application to confirm these are the correct ones.)
Hope this helps.

Re: 1941 GMC K-18 scr-197 radio truck
John - and you are absolutely correct Sir. At the MVPA thingy there was a set I recognized BUT - they wanted $100 for the set without wiper blades - just NWH I am paying that or would get the owner to fork over that kind of money - we do know where we can get them but its really no big deal because we are not looking for an era perfect museum piece.
Got the brush guard nearly finished - looked at - zoomed in - manipulated pictures to get all the dimensions I could and hopefully I am pretty close to what it was. If its not - I am sure there are none to be purchased either - so we'll live with this one.
Hope you like the results:

The truck looks great. I am glad we had a chance to meet at the MVPA. It is impressive how fast you guys work and come up with a great vehicle. That brush guard is a work of art! Paul, TM9
