to Weasels' owners: a suggestion...

Post by pierino » Sat Dec 23, 2017 3:17 am

I'm presently thinking, and thinking again, about a possible Weasel's restoration...

I'm reading manuals, book, articles on magazines...trying to imagine possible problems in doing this task...

thus,... those of you that already made a restoration on these vehicles, what could say? suggestions? why go ahead, why better to stay instead?

thank you and Merry Christmas!!

I spoke with two guys in France that have gone through big complete restaurations.
My humble advice would be to start looking for tracks; and for the track rebuilding process; as unless I'm wrong, there are no newly made tracks avaliable.
"Just" unriveting the track tiles and bolting them on a new rubber band is intellectually an easy task; but multiplied by several hundreds it becomes a week, or weeks full job!
Parts (in France) are not common but interestingly not very expensive (I passed on a complete engine with all accessories, tags and original paint for 1500€).

That is a really funny little vehicle, it's an entry in the tracked world; but it's tracked!
It also has the often forgotten possibility of going amphibious, event without the float tanks.
Also remember that it's not really made to run on asphalt, and that you might have to put it on a trailer quite often.

more infos, please, as the the specific M29WEASEL site doesn't work properly: where to look for SERIAL NUMBER if the data plate has disappeared?

there's a s/n stamped on the hull somewhere?

thank you, and Happy New Year!

This may help you find the USA 401***** number. At the front of an M29C (and late M29) weasel you will see a vertical line of bolts (on both sides) where the front flotation tank was attached to the hull. From an imaginary vertical centreline, through that line of bolts, measure back 863mm and that will place you in the area to locate the USA #. See attached photo. Directly under the USA is the 401***** number. Hope this helps. Cheers JW

There are two numbers to look for, The Hull number located to the rear of the passenger side engine compartment divider bulkhead (close to the top coaming) and the ORD number that is again affixed to the engine compartment divider bulkhead directly behind the drivers position. In the attached photo you can see where the data plate was positioned. Cheers JW

Thank you!

...I was indeed aware about these data plates (that are unfortunately possibly missing from the vehicle i'm after right now....) and my doubt was if any other "stamping" was maybe available somewhere else in order to date the weasel...

Could maybe make a good guess starting from the engine number instead?

Thank you so much for the education.... I have to learn a lot on this kind of pretty vehicles... 8)

Unlike other vehicles, there are no other stampings in/on the hull. The USA#, ORD data plate and Hull ID tag are the only way of identifying a weasel. Engine numbers are not a good source of information as they are all stamped T24-********** and there is no documentation that I know of to assign and engine to a particular hull.
Having said that, you could broadly search the old weasel forum http://www.m29cweasel.com/ (The weasel forum is still under repair so don't bother trying to open threads with attachments at this point of time). There was a spreadsheet with the the chronology of additions, deletions and changes in Weasel components in serial number order on this website http://www.hmkf.no/public.aspx?pageid=68630 but the link no longer works. You could try and contact that forum as the HMKF website is still current.
