TANKS IN TOWN MONS BELGIUM

Post by Desertdog » Mon Aug 27, 2007 2:36 pm

Just got back from the "Tanks in Town" weekend in Mons, Belgium, I took my M4 A4 Sherman over to join with other tank and WW2 vehicle owners for the annual tour around the city of Mons. The road run on the Sunday is about 20 miles long and takes the convoy of about 100 vehicles all day to drive through the local villages and off road tracks ending up in the town square in the early evening.
we met with out old friend from the USA, Charles Varner, former president of the MVPA, and as he had never ridden on a Sherman before, I invited him to come with me and my crew.

I hope you enjoy the pictures, it really is a fantastic event, it is probably the only place you will see so many WW2 military vehicles, all crewed up, driving on the public highway in one long convoy.

I enjoyed the Sunday, great cross country driving through the woods. Too many haults for my taste, it could have started a bit later and kept going for longer to get into the square for 6pm. Glad you made it round and hope to see you there next year with my new 'project'! The aircraft were a bit, err, low, dont think that would have happened in England! Tim.

Fantastic photos!! I love the way the Europeans use their vehicles. Convoys on roads, dirt and mud. I really don't see convoys like that in the US. Thanks for posting.

I saw it. Thought it must have broken down at the head of the convoy and been stripped of parts as vehicles went past, we were at the back and there wasn't much left! :D

I was thinking the same thing. But it will be gone by now.Heard alot of French men asking where they were and pointing it on maps

Sorry Bangle 99,had no time to take out the camera. It was on rough terrain and we had to hold on real good.I even couldnt see what type it was,but remember that the tracks were in pretty good condition.

Hi guys

Long time since this thread was posted on but I thought I'd drop a reply anyway. The Halftrack wreck was actually still in the wood as late as May 2017, so she survived nearly another 10 years.

I know this because it was my brother, father and I that recovered her! She's certainly not in a pretty state (can't compare to the original pictures in this post because sadly I can't see them). But suffice to say that while she isn't pretty she is mechanically nearly complete. She's been recovered and is due to land in her new home in the UK in the next few days after it took a very long time to transport her back to the UK.

Restoration is going to beginning once she's home and to answer one last question . . . She's an M2A1 White half track.

:D

Tom
