FS WLA Harley Davidson Crate Motor SOLD

Post by maximusroar » Mon Oct 23, 2017 7:59 am

FS; WLA Harley Davidson Crate Motor, this is an unstamped motor never been started, exhaust ports, spark plugs, intake, and oil pumps are all still with original factory plugs. You can tell by looking at the cases, screws and nuts/bolts that its never been wrenched on. Matching belly case numbers. Cases, mounts, all look perfect. One cylinder head fin is damaged along with the primary oil tube being bent. Motor is complete with timer, pumps, and generator. If motor is to be used, I would recommend it being completely taken apart and gone through. I'm including a good stamped side cover with Linkert M-88 carb that will need work. Asking $5500 Located in Wisconsin, one hour north of Milwaukee

hi, how hard will it be to have the motor stamped with new serial numbers? can you still get the old style numbers to match? I see you included another side cover with numbers on it. is this the easiest way of getting a title? I came across a wla motor a few years ago and it had small numbers on it like a new cycle. it didn't say wla on it so I didn't buy it as I was not sure at the time if it was a wla motor. would this affect the value of the bike or motor? I hope you could answer some of these questions for me as I searched the web and could not find out much about it. thank you and good luck with your sale....bob

I don't think the MoCo will put a number into a known Blank Replacement..
Exchanging the case with the one with a VIN only gives you a non-matching motor...decreased value.
I'd leave it blank and provide the DMV with the casenumbers, I'm sure they can mate some paperwork to those.

You can buy the special Harley vintage font stamps numbers & letters but they are not cheap $50 Pre stamp. I think the sets sell for around $400-$600

I see them at bike shows a vendor sells them they are correct as factory.

Hi Bob,
I guess this is debatable as to how one would or would not stamp a motor like this. My plan was to use the numbers from the extra/donor cover and have that stamped into the crate motor. I have a friend here in Wisconsin that got a hold of original HD stamps either from a dealer or past employee that would stamp the motor for me. Otherwise like one guy posted, there's a gentleman that shows up at the AMCA meets like Wauseon that has all the correct font/size stamps for many models. I believe he's also adverts in the AMCA magazine. Someone also once told me that even though the lower cases are stamped 43-xxxx that the ID were mostly all stamped with a "42" WLA-XXXX. I'm not sure if that went into the 44-xxxx years? Maybe someone could shed light on this.
take care,
Luke

Gentlemen,
Everything that you have discussed on stamping the cases is all illegal. The factory is the only entity that can do it and be legal.Yes,dealers did stamp replacement cases, however this practice was stopped when HD required they send the old cases in and they sent back the new stamped case.
The stamps sold are not illegal, but their use is.(some are not as accurate as advertised).
The photo of the stamped case is to small for great detail. It appears the VIN pad has been ground and restamped.I may be wrong. This is also a felony.
It would be a total shame to invest in a project and have it seized for having a bad VIN. The way I understand it,Europe is not as picky and register off the frame.
This motor could be used in the states if you go through the process your state requires. They will inspect it and then stamp it,assigning it a number. All states are different. The value of the project would be quit less than an original.
Hope this helps

I don't know what the casenumber is on that motorhalf with VIN, but I wouldn't 'just' copy it..
It's from an earlier type, so anyone in the know will see that the VIN won't match the other tell tales..like casenumbers and tag.
Do you have paperwork with that case?
If it were me...I'd find a VIN from a motor near your casenumbers...and add one or two up that VIN..
Yes..that's probably a fake number or even worse; a known number on another engine...still better than a VIN from another year...

Thank you for your legal perspectives. I've attached a few pics of the extra cover. The number looks clean, just worked around the casting flaw. No paperwork, I brought this cover at a Viking Chapter meet, years ago from a NW Harley Dealer. No paperwork.

That VIN-ed motorcase is from an early type II 42WLA, made in either december '41 or january '42.
Your Blank motor has casenumbers 43-20547, which is at the very end of type III production..
If you look at the tags, one says 'L1' the other 'L2'...so cast with one year difference.

Taken from the Yahoo-lists; the one closest to your blank is 42WLA19983 with casenumber 43-19873.
So they're 674 apart...as a 'chosen' VIN that would result in 42WLA20657~ish...

Chances are that number already existed in 1942.
Big question, 70+ years down the line; does that particular bike still exist?
I'd take my chances and ask my local DMV if that number rings any bells...
If not..use it
