You mean an NOS set of rods with NOS races in them? If so that is also a lot of honing.matt506 wrote:FYI OZ I got a NOS set and they Mike out at 1.4973. Just saying.

Re: Building a 42WLA Blank Boss Engine in a Crate
I finally got around to cleaning the cases, so it is time to send them off to the machinist to have the RS case bushings installed and then line honed to match. When they get back I'll assemble the LS, RS and cam cover mask the appropriate portions and paint them OD.

Re: Building a 42WLA Blank Boss Engine in a Crate
We used Bill's Sunnen honing machine and had them to specs in about 2 hours. They look beautiful. WHen my rollers come in we'll start assembly and I'll post some more images.17thAirborne wrote:You mean an NOS set of rods with NOS races in them? Re: Building a 42WLA Blank Boss Engine in a Crate
I've updated my list of total costs for parts. The list is mostly NOS and Take-Off OEM parts. NOS is getting more and more scarce as the years go by. OEM take off parts are readily available and make a big difference. I used a few US manufacturers like Eastern for a very small number of parts like the roller bearings and the L and R shafts. Connecting Rod shafts are still available NOS and are not expensive. Cases, cyl heads and rear cylinders and connecting rods are near impossible to find in NOS. unless you want to pay a premium. I was happy to get my cases when I did. Since I have been doing this project, the range of NOS case prices has widened from the first one I saw to the latest at over $900. Good luck finding an NOS rear cylinder.
Anyway, total cost for parts with cost placeholders for the few remaining things I need is at
$3885
I will have an additional cost when I send off the cases to have the bushings installed, and of course there is the cost of cleaner, rags, trips to Bill's place to work, and let's not forget BEER costs. Those alone can be staggering.
Once I have the cases back, I can dry fit them and then verify the crate dimensions and clearances before beginning on that part of the project.

Re: Building a 42WLA Blank Boss Engine in a Crate
A little more progress today. Bill and I installed the crank shaft, sprocket shaft and gear shaft today. We checked the shafts and the runout of the flywheel.
1. Cleaned all the parts and de-burred the wood-ruff key channels.
2. We had to use a tap and die on the nuts and threads on the crank shaft as the factory left both threads covered in copper. The shaft and nuts came out of a NOS packaging as seen above in another post. That slowed us down for a bit/
3. We installed the sprocket and gear shaft in both respective flywheels and following Palmer's book torqued them slowly to 50 ft lbs.
4. Using Bill's lathe, we checked the runout of the flywheel. We could not get a measurement better than .005" on the flywheels, although at the shaft it was 0.000" as expected. I did not get a picture of the runout check on the flywheel.
5. We then tightened the nut to above 85 ft lbs and had to go a bit more to get the hole in the shaft nut lock to align. The specs called for between 85-125 ft lbs. The 030 screws were secured with lock tight to keep the shaft lock in place.
6. We then installed the connecting rod shaft on one side followed by the bearings, then the connecting rods and the other flywheel.
7. The bearings were standard and there is absolutely no up and down play and the side play in the connecting rods is minimal.
8. We left the LS connecting rod nut loose and we will finish the flywheels at the next visit.
Here are some images of the progress.

Re: Building a 42WLA Blank Boss Engine in a Crate
After I returned from Bill's my Right Side Case and Cam Cover were on the front doorstep. back from Superior Motorcycle Services in Superior WI. Dan installed and pinned the new bushings in the RS case and line honed them to the blind bushings in the cover. I can paint them now and begin construction on the bottom of the crate which I will use as my engine rebuilding stand.
The case is bolted to the wooden shipping board that was securely packed in a larger box which I used to keep the mail monkeys from damaging my goods. Dan repacked with lots of foam and bubble on the board I made and the cases came back undamaged.

Re: Building a 42WLA Blank Boss Engine in a Crate
I ordered the LS and RS shaft bearings in STD. All I have left to purchase are the oil pressure switch, cylinder head bolts, the cylinder bracket and a sprocket.

If you can wait I was getting original sprockets out of the crate in bags for 10 bucks. I will see him in Davenport in a few weeks. Might also have a oil pressure switch for you too. matt
