DUKW Transfer Case Reseal
My transfer case started leaking a while back. I've been keeping an absorbent pad under it and should have just kept doing that. What a job. The cross member that it is bolted to isn't just the flat part you see but also is U shaped and goes down the side of a bracket on the inside of the frame. The assembly has to be lifted fairly straight up. I only found 3 of the 14 bolts in place that hold this in . You can see 3 bolts on each side on the top, there are 4 more down below on each side. 3 of the bolts I could see didn't have nuts on the bottom. Only 1 bolt was holding the transfer case/brake drum/ driveshaft together. 2 had fallen out and one was loose. It is important that these bolts go thru from the TC side. If you run them thru from the other way the lock washers keep them from tightening up as they hit the flange before the lay flat. I think a previous owner had run them thru the wrong way and they had loosened up with 2 falling out. I got the seal kit from Frank in Canada. Excellent NOS condition from the 1950's. Ended up using the leather seals that were in this kit. They seem to have more bearing surface on the yokes than a new one. I soaked them in oil before using them. The seals that were in there were National 450301. I used Permatex 2 non-hardening on all the gaskets. The come-a-long was the $15 from Harbor Freight, $12 with coupon and a free tape measure, and worked just fine but only has 3.5' of lift. The height from the side deck to the top of the 2x6 was 23". If you only use one 2x6 make sure it is old growth wood, if the new fast growing stuff I'd use two.

To add something to this old post the Permatex #2 was the wrong sealant to use. It is not for constant contact or immersion in oil like you get in the bottom half of a transfer case. My lower seals starting weeping oil again. I would use Permatex for differentials. It is designed to be used in contact with oil.
