For Sale: RARE, M656 amphibious 8x8
For sale 1969 Ford M656 amphibious 5 ton cargo truck w/winch, the speedo says it has 6000 miles and I don't doubt it. My firm asking price is $10,000, which is what I paid for it about 5 years back and I’m not interested in trades, I have too many MV’s. These are quite rare, especially in an unmolested condition. I know someone who did maintenance during the competition between the XM54 and the XM656, he told me the drivers all loved the 656 over it’s 6WD competitor and nicknamed it the “Mover.” For price or political reasons, I’m not sure which, the M54 was chosen, even though the 656 surpassed it in every way. The M656 was later resurrected as a vehicle in three variants for the Pershing I Missile System. The last trucks I’ve seen this complete were on eBay about 8 years back and the guy wanted $60,000 for the pair (thats crazy, they aren’t THAT rare).
3 of the 4 bilge pumps are there, only one missing. Also the electric air valve to the horn must have grit stuck in it, it started sounding all by itself today (scared the C#@P out of me) and I've blocked it off for now.
I do NOT recommend swimming these trucks, when you swim, the engine is IN the water. They are powered by an LDS465-2 engine that makes significantly more power than the 465-1(A-D) and has a 6 speed Allison transmission. I’ve read power ratings on this engine anywhere from 210 to 225 hp. The transfer case for 8 wheel drive is air shifted from the dash. It has power steering and air brakes, the front 2 axles steer.
The body is all aluminum construction and it has a 15’ dropside bed with aluminum folding troop seats along both sides and the front. The truck needs to be repainted as it is quite oxidized, but being aluminum, you don’t NEED to paint it, it would just look better. The strange color on the interior is just heavily oxidized paint.
I bought this truck because I really wanted a HEMTT and knew I’d never be able to get one. Since I now own a HEMTT, this truck is not needed in our collection. We used it for parades and one camping trip and it has been known to us as the truck that has never let us down. We have driven this truck 1000 miles since we bought it and it cruises nicely at 60 mph, thanks to the larger 395-85R-20 tires it now has. I have hauled 15,000 lb in the bed of this truck and it ran down the freeway with ease.

I can deliver it up to 500 miles for the price of fuel in my F450.
Rather than going into further detail here, I’ll answer any questions via email or phone.

That's the way it happens sometimes, I said the same thing 2 months ago when a HEMTT came up for sale, my wife was rather insistant that I needed to find a way. There is NO WAY this truck would be for sale if I didn't get the HEMTT, we were going to get the expandable van body and make it into an XM791 for MV camping trips and air shows.

How wide is this vehicle? Do you need any over-width permits to drive it on the street? Oversized vehicle? Just wondering if a permit was required for the size (not height or length, just width). Please exclude any Kommiefornia Regulations or Restrictions. The state I live in still abides by most of a Constitution.

It is 8' wide, not oversize in any way. It weighs, so says the manual 15,330 with winch and has a payload of 10,400 making it's GVW 25,730, under the 26,001 for CDL. No permits here, regular auto license is all thats required. I don't live in Kalifornia but they don't often follow the Constitution here in WA either

I am interested in acquiring an M-656.
Is this truck still available?
Could we speak by phone?

If he searches the forum, I found one in Belton, Texas last year and posted such.

Nice article, shows they perhaps made the wrong choice in 5 ton. They really are nice to drive and own.
