WTS: Engine
Hello.
I pulled this engine from what I believe is an early CJ2A with column shift. The serial number pad is blank. Engine turns freely. Cast date is 3-27. Has skid plate and pulley shield.
(Sorry, but the red engine lift bracket is not included.)
Asking $500 OBO
Please contact me through email or PM.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike:
That's a 1st generation gear-drive engine, mid-'46 thru Jan '47.
Serial number would be on the water pump boss, not oval pad:

Re: WTS: Engine
Sean,
That's good to know! I have a similar engine. But mine has a serial number stamped into the boss behind the oil filter. I believe the date on the bottom was June 45. I've been confused as to it's origins. Serial number begins with MC or NC and is on the boss behind the oil filter. I wasn't sure what the deal was, since it has the oil filter boss and the boss above the water pump. But mine is chain drive.
Now I know!!!

Sean.
Thanks for the information. I cleaned off the water pump boss to find the following number. Any idea for a date range?
Thank you,
Mike

Re: WTS: Engine
Mike:
Engine # 36546 would have found it's way into vehicle s/n approx. 349xx (give or take a couple of hundred), late April to mid May '46.
I am surprised that this block is a "CC" casting. The "CC" castings normally indicate a gear-drive timing block, but those supposedly didn't come into use until engine 44417 on July 9 '46:
Can you confirm if timing cover is chain or gear drive? Can't quite tell from the photo.
Given the casting date 3-27 ('46), it would/should have been machined & assembled within 2 weeks of that, then put in inventory awaiting assembly line.TwoCar wrote:... I cleaned off the water pump boss to find the following number. Any idea for a date range?

Hello Sean.
Great information. Thank you.
How do I tell if its gear or chain driven without taking of the cover? Here is a better pic, if it helps.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike:
Chain drive cover pics here: 644425 Chain cover
Gear drive cover pic here: 643834 Gear cover
Would you check one more thing for me please? Behind the front engine plate, what's the casting shape? (almost impossible to get a photo of, but should be able to see it by eye, or feel it by fingers).
Is it flat, or does it have the plateau as shown green below (1/2-3/4" high):
Thanks!

Hello Sean.
It's gear because it has a plateau. Very interesting.

That IS very interesting. Something new for the history books.
It would seem that Willys was casting gear-drive blocks very early on (anticipating the final change over), but still assembling as chain-drive engines. Presumably to "use up" remaining inventory of chain parts before going all gear drive.
Learn something new every day!
