Too much endplay

Post by Tom Lach » Sun Jul 23, 2017 6:23 am

Good Morning,
I'm reassembling my replacement block which is a gear drive CJ2 motor.
When I picked up my crank, they told me they had to take .020 off the thrust surface to clean it up and to be sure to check the endplay. Not knowing what I know now, I took the crank home happy to have it back. Everything has gone together great with correct clearances on the mains and rods but find I can do nothing about the .024 endplay I now have.

From reading all the posts, I see no options for removeing endplay if there aren't any shims. Seems like the machine shop has to take .020 off the front surface the thrust washer rests on?

Thanks

End play is adjusted by adding shims under the crank pulley; study your M38 engine manual. It should be 4 to 6 thousandths.

So do I have it wrong? If there is .024 without any shims, won't adding shims increase the endplay?

You have it right, Tom.
When the thrust surface was machined, the front of the crankshaft, where the shims go, should have been machined an equal amount as well.
You have .024 with no shims and no options to close up the end play any more but remove the crank and take it back to the shop and have them finish the job.

Thanks for the reply Wolfman

Seems like there are two options for removing endplay with no shims

Machine the crankshaft shoulder
Machine the thrust washer

I'll be taking the crank back today
