What was wrong with that motor that made you decide to scrap it?

Re: I.D. Jeep ehgine
I would have sold it for $50.00 if anyone had showed interest but the "Jeep engine/jeep experts"(none of which could tell me what year it was or even what it came out of) told me at the show with the plugs out for as long as they were out the cylinders were probably rusted beyond repair as well as cracked (ice) and more than likely the lower end was toast as well. Funny thing was that it did get a lot of attention. I saw guys run from the next isle when they saw a jeep motor but as soon as it became apparent that it wasn't from a WW2 jeep the words 'junk' 'garbage' & 'scrap' were the only thing I heard. If I were in my 20's and had 10 acres w/buildings to store stuff I might have given it another try,I took a gamble and lost. I did also post it on this site before my show and got no clear answers. I did save the trans w/bell and tin side cover....any takers???

Re: I.D. Jeep ehgine
Shame you didnt get the answers you needed,, I cant read the first digit on the block serial number? is it a letter, it is after the fact but do you know what the casting numbers on the block and head were? I cant make them out either.
Personally, I would of scrapped the engine too, I can barely give away a cj engine that is stuck or has issues. But I have 5 or 6 or 7 of them here so they are a dime a dozen.
On the tranny, what is it? looks like a side loader so the gears are probably good, maybe, find the casting numbers on the side where the shifters are, does it shift? take the cover off and look.
If the tin cover dosent have a F on it, postage is more than it is worth.

Adam,
No letters in the serial number just five digits and the first one was a 9.

The casting numbers would have indicated to anyone what engine you had. True, post war engines (CJ2A, CJ3B, M-38, M-38A1, etc) aren’t worth much....unless you are looking for a good one. I have a pre war Model 39 L-134 engine that’s had absolutely no interest...but I can’t bring myself to scrap it.
Too bad it wasn’t saved....that’s all.

Unless your primary go-to message board happens to be the CJ2APage or the CJ3A Page, rather than G503. It makes me cringe when I hear you guys say that. I have gladly traded an MB engine for a CJ3A-era replacement engine, straight across. Why? Same as you - I wanted a correct engine, or as close to one as I could get.

Don't fret most would have done the same thing. I would have. Makes more room for other crap to pile up in my shop..dan1 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2017 10:20 amI would have sold it for $50.00 if anyone had showed interest but the "Jeep engine/jeep experts"(none of which could tell me what year it was or even what it came out of) told me at the show with the plugs out for as long as they were out the cylinders were probably rusted beyond repair as well as cracked (ice) and more than likely the lower end was toast as well. I should have said “post war engines aren’t worth much to us (WWII jeep guys, etc), but to those looking for one for their post war projects they are worth a great deal.
I traded an early 1946 CJ engine and some CJ parts for a late Sept ‘44 MB engine I needed...so yes, post war engines do have value!

True. but, if it needed valve seats and sleeves, I would have to agree with your original assessment.
