L Head to F Head Conversion Extra Intake Ports

Post by cpiunno » Tue Feb 14, 2017 6:34 am

I have an L head block which has been converted to be used with the F head. As can be seen in the picture below. One thing that was left in the block are these two extra ports between the exhaust ports, which were the intake ports in the L head design. What are people doing to block these off? Does somebody sell a pre-manafacturered plug that will fit?

LIB. I've never seen such a thing before. Looks like the two intake ports have been machined to accept an expansion plug. BW

I'm guessing that there was an expansion plug in there when I pulled it out of the truck, because I didn't even notice there was anything wrong. It must have looked natural or it would have caught my attention.

Just curious, but in the blanking plates installed in the old intake valve ports, there appear to be holes, do these go through into the intake or are they merely recessed holes for a tool to insert them?
Just really curious, as the holes on the outside would not matter if there was no air, but oil could pass up through the old valve stem guide hole if those were not sealed.
Funny (economically) way to repurpose a lock VS recasting with a new arrangement.

Found your other post: "a guide for the push rods."
Thx

That's the damm-dest thing! Without seeing it for myself, I would have never thought this was possible.

Thanks for showing us!

The old intake ports were left completely open. You can stick your finger up into the intake port and all the way through where the push rod will pass through. So, it definitely needs to be well sealed.

I'm having a problem finding plugs that will fit in these holes. The bore measures 1 9/16 (or 4mm), which seems to be a pretty standard size. However, the depth is the issue. These are very shallow bores. About 1/8", maybe a little more, but much less than 1/4". I could hammer in a deeper one, I just have concerns about it falling out.
