Engine parts interchange
I'm preparing to disassemble a CJ2A L134 engine, about 1948 model and a Kaiser HJ L134 engine about 1951 model and combine parts to have a usable/rebuildable (as needed) engine. Anything I should look for, things that will not interchange, etc? Thanks for any help.

Re: Engine parts interchange
As long as they are both gear drive shouldn't be any problems. May need to check the head gasket but I think the difference in very early 2a's was only 46 engines.

Re: Engine parts interchange
One detail is to check that the counterweights on the crankshaft you install do not contact the oil galley plugs in the crankcase. You can install the chain type crankshaft in the gear type motor, the gear on the crankshaft will block the hole and no pressure will be lost.

Re: Engine parts interchange
Plans have taken 180, the HJ block is badly cracked/not usable so I will only be having some extra engine parts. The WILLYS block might not be usable due to rust pitting the cylinders so I'm probably going to be looking for a block or rebuildable engine.

Re: Engine parts interchange
If that willys block is without any crack, you can still sleeve it back to standard. It is not easy to find good L134 block nowadays.

Yeah, I know about boring and sleeveing. I'm concerned about the depth of the pitting in the cylinder walls as well as the cost. The machine shop owner (who is an "old time auto machinest") expressed some concerns about not being able get them all out and later causing problems. "Course that probably won't be in my lifetime.

Re: Engine parts interchange
Pitting is not an issue if you have sleeves installed.
The new liner is pressed in and cover the pits. Puts the cylinder back to standard bore.

The concern is if there is remaining rust not able to remove by the sleeve installation process it might rust through again at some later time. That's what I meant when I said "not in my lifetime".Wolfman wrote:Pitting is not an issue if you have sleeves installed.

Re: Engine parts interchange
The crack in this block is "U" shaped, about 3 inches on each leg and one inch at the top in #4 cylinder about one inch below the top of the cylinder. I've considered investigating having this welded then having the cylinder bored and sleeved. Anyone ever tried this? How did it work out? SS blocks are not that plentiful and I'd like to keep it if it can be done for a reasonable cost.old stuff wrote:Plans have taken 180, the HJ SS block is badly cracked/not usable so I will only be having some extra engine parts.

"SS"? Why not just buy one of Brent Mullins PE-95 running engines, they are a "Bolt In".

Thanks for the suggestion. "Why?", this is my thoughts:Ben Dover wrote:"SS"? Why not just buy one of Brent Mullins PE-95 running engines, they are a "Bolt In".
1. I like the challenge.
2. Most importantly, it provides a learning experience for me and Grandson, not to mention the bonding time.
3. It gives me something to think about at 3 AM when I can't sleep.
4. Part of enjoying retirement!!!!!!
5. It's not all about the destination. Enjoying the trip is equally if not more important, IMHO

Yep, beats paying a shrink. Got the HJ engine apart, 2 bad pistons, block might be able to be sleeved. Still working on the 2a, one bad piston, don't know what else. Everything appears to be stuck from water infiltration. Next step is to get the engine out of the frame.dpcd67 wrote:As I tell everyone about all my projects; (The most recent of which is an M38, just picked up yesterday);
