Generator equipped CJ3a
Hello!
I have had a CJ3a standing in my barn for some decades now.
I checked it today to find the serial number, and then I realized that he plates with information on the dashboard states that it has been equipped with a generator, but I am unable to find information about the generator and why it has been equipped with it.
There are two extra instruments also, an hour recorder and a rpm meter.
I also wonder if it was equipped with the F-134 since it is a hole in the hood/bonnet and a box welded on top of it.
Do anyone have som information about these CJ3as?
The engine is a 1.6 litre in-line four Volvo B16, and was put in around 1970. It is slightly more powerful than a L134 (60 hp, compared to 54 hp).
The serial number is almost unreadable, but it is 452-GB1 30350.
For some reason the windshield have the M38 style blocked ventilation, but it still has the wipers placed below the window as a usual CJ3a. Edit: The windshield is an M38 one. Probably it was swapped with an M38 once
Here are some photos (click on them to see a larger version).

Re: Generator equipped CJ3a
I had posted a link to the CJ3A thread earlier. I probably should have mentioned that on the 3A forum.

It looks like the lever to the right of the tranny shifter is very long. Is that for the transfer case or something else?

Yes, it is for the transfer case. It is about twice as long as the front wheel drive lever.

Hello Kristaga?
Larry is correct. You have a very rare unit and should hang on to all things that make it special. There should have been a PTO, and floor plates for the PTO to drive the on board generator set. Perhaps you can post some photos of the rest of the jeep.
I believe they came with the L134. No telling when the hood scoop was introduced.

452-GB1 started at 10,000 and ran to 39652, so yours is about 2/3 the way thru the 1952 model year.

Some more photographs. Click on them to see an enlargement.
Do they answer the questions, or raise new?
There has been a hole in the floor which has been plugged.
Rear.
Rusty driver's floor.
The plate cowering a hole. The transfer case lever hits the dashboard when in low.
Just loaded all bits and piecs together for the occation.
There seems to never have been paint below the raised hood.
Windshield.
Detail of the vacuum windshield wipers. The paint below the white paint looks olive.
Rear.
Close-up of the generator plate
Close-up of the usual part of the plate.
Old-style horn button.
Old style radiator.
6.00-16-tires, Nokia Haka-Hakkapellita (spare tire, the rest are BF Goodrich).
Dana 44.
Driver's seat.
Passenger seat. Note that there is no compartment below this chair.
The seats.

Very interesting jeep, looks like it has 3 phase output from what I could read on the labels. The slope on the floor and no tool box looks like equipment was there. It is not a certain thing that the cj's were primed, I recall some comments that sometimes they weren't if it slowed down production. The PTO has been removed.

Re: Generator equipped CJ3a
Something odd doth appear. If that is a 1952 CJ3A it shouldn't have radiator tabs on the front crossmember.

The M38 had side brackets on the wheel housings for rear seat? Hmmm!

http://www.cj-3a.com/dating_a_cj.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; states that some bottom mounted radiators was used on later CJ-3as. I have also read somewhere that M38 had bottom mounted radiators.

Re: Generator equipped CJ3a
What Bob is saying is that there was an overlap period when the transition was being made and some could have the new type radiator and some could still have the old style until supply was exhausted.kristaga wrote:http://www.cj-3a.com/dating_a_cj.htm states that some bottom mounted radiators was used on later CJ-3as. Yes, some M-38's did have bottom mount rads but this isn't an M-38, it's a CJ3A.
