Swiss trailer: modified WWII 1/4 ton?
Hello there,
this is my first post here, and if I wasn't in need for some quick help I wouldn't be so bold to ask frankly: can anyone confirm that this is a wartime (and not a post-war) trailer? I live in Germany and have no opportunity to examine that trailer in person right now: The Swiss seller claims it got some of the original details as it was bought as surplus from the US Army after WWII. The notorious tailgate was added while on service with the Swiss Army. The data plates are of no use as they were put on later. If this is an MBT - or actually "was" - I will take the burden to buy (customs, paperwork!) and restore it to its former glory. If I fell for just another license-built MBT-look-alike, please stop me!
P.S.: I know that there is a lot of information regarding differences between WWII and post-war trailers here and on other web-sites, but as far as I read these up to now I only found nothing wrong with the sellers claim, that this is an original. Most of you might have better eyes and, of course, experience.

Re: Swiss trailer: modified WWII 1/4 ton?
This appears to be a nice WW2 trailer. I had a Swiss Army trailer a few years ago and it looked very similar to this. The one exception is it has the wrong lunette on it. You need the lunette that has the smaller shaft between ring and the taper that goes into the landing leg bracket. It does have correct parking brake handle, and there are no grab handles on the trailer corners which would indicate an M100 trailer. Not a civilian Bantam because there are no stake pockets in the bed. They did a nice job saving the rear panel when they cut in the tail gate. 90% sure you won't go wrong with this trailer. Best wishes; Leo

The confirmation will be when you drop the left front spring hanger and wire wheel the gusset plate on the bottom of the frame.....If there is an ACM number then it is a US made trailer...if not then it isn't. Right now I'm pretty sure it is a US built but that is how you can tell FOR SURE!

Thank you very much, Leo and Chuck: you took some burden off my heart as I lately saw a Luther-Jordan trailer here on this forum (certainly never in Swiss Army service, and an older post on G503.com), which made me wonder how many very similar trailers, mistaken for a MBT/ACM/Bantam, might be around.
Thank you again, and Best Wishes from Germany!

When you confirm the presence of an ACM number...send it and other answers to my sticky on How To Identify....and I can estimate a USA Number and the missing mfg , serial number and DOD for you.

Many of the Swiss Trailers had replacement fenders that were a bit different.

Thank you, Chuck, I will certainly do so, but might take some time as I already experience how difficult it is to get an (by then paid for) vehicle from the Non-EEC Switzerland to Germany (customs/fees and declaration). But you and all the others who had a look and post a comment helped a lot already. So I am "on my way" to get this sleeping beauty behind my Willys MB.Chuck Lutz wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2018 9:59 amWhen you confirm the presence of an ACM number...send it and other answers to my sticky on How To Identify....and I can estimate a USA Number and the missing mfg , serial number and DOD for you.

I doubt there'll be customs fees or declarations involved, just load it up another trailer or truck and bring it home.
