Trailer plug helped

Post by TonyStandefer » Thu Nov 16, 2017 4:51 pm

Looking for a picture or guidance as to how the ww2 style trailer plug is wired. Specifically how are the wires connected to the copper spring terminals? Thanks

Looking at the plug end with the guide pointer at 6:00...Brown is at 10:00
Red is at 8:00
White is at 4:00
no wire on 2:00 This is on Jeep Draw,a little tricky to find though.

I found that information looking for a pic or something in how the wire is attached to the plug, soldered or just clamped?

Tony,
Here is the wiring graph for the B/O switch.

I made my own harness using 12 gauge (for brighter lights)

Just followed the graph as not that many wires in a harness.
The lights are really bright. So worked well.
Hope this helps you with your project.

I'm not sure how to explain this, literally I am asking how the wires attach to the inside of the plug. Can someone unscrew their plug and take a pic?

There are eyelets soldered & held between the screwheads/copper prongs.I used shrinkwrap over the soldered area as is done in the rest of the harness.Space is short in there...

I believe they used a 90 degree eyelet style connector on each wire.

Hey Guys,

Not to change the subject, but since this thread is talking about the plug wire/connection, I have the following question:

What gauge wire is used for the intervehicular cable between the plug and the BO switch? What length is it supposed to be? Ralph was kind enough to sell me an extra plug he had, but to this point I have not found wiring so I plan to make my own for now. Also, does anyone know there to get the correct type "loom" to cover the wiring? And if so, what size loom is correct? Any info on "building" the wiring would be appreciated.

Hi,
This is the asphalt type "loom" cover you need;

https://www.ebay.com/itm/50-Asphalt-Fab ... SwGotWsSzK

I'm not sure of the diameter you need, it will depend on the size of cable you intend to use. You will also need to find a shorter length but that's the stuff you need to be looking for.

Regards,
Chris.

Thanks for the info Ralph and Chris, appreciate it a lot!

If anyone else has info on the diameter of the loom or gauge of wire needed I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

You can probably ask the VWOM guys to sell you the loom material and you will need to pull through the wire. That might mean your wire gauge is to large or too small...meaning it won't fit or the loom covering slides all over the place.

As noted, 81 inches in needed plus the hardware at both ends. Many guys have just kept watching ebay and scored a cable assembly for a cannon or something but they usually have 4 wires in the loom. You can't really tell if the loom has three or four wires unless you go looking for that detail and even then, if the extra wire needed for BRAKES is snipped off so as to not be visible...no problem.

On rare occasions, original 3-wire, loomed harness shows up but it usually commands a really HIGH price.

The original loom material is blackish-green when it ages but I think the brand-new loom material used on jeep harnesses would work just fine.

Thanks for the reply, Chuck. What does the acronym VWOM mean?

Also, yes I want the loom fitment to be correct and not sloppy because it is too large and slides all over. I figured that I could cover the 3 wires in electrical tape or similar to build up the diameter to snugly fit inside the loom making it appear "correct". I also considered buying the plug/wire that Brett Mullins is selling (rubber coated, 4 wire) and cut off the plug and replace it with my correct plug from Ralph, and then cover the rubber covering of the wires with asphalt loom to make it look correct.

Thanks!

1) the rubber coated harnesses I have seen (post war era) are already too fat and adding a layer of loom big enough to slide over that would make it WAY to fat.
2) VWOM - Vintage Wiring of Maine
3) keep an eye on ebay for one of those cannon tail light cables to show up. Usually with a bracket to attach it to the barrel and a left/side taillight attached to it.
4) or just look for the cable being offered by a sharp eyed gee member here or on ebay who recognizes that the three-wire and four-wire ill both suffice to hook up your G529.
