Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
Thanks everyone, I'm very pleased to have purchased it. Without the advice I received I would have been hesitant. I still have a GPW waiting to be restored but thought about tackling the trailer first just for the experience as I have never done anything like this before.

That's another pretty good idea. Comparatively, the trailers should be simpler and less expensive, while still giving you some good experience with metal work, welding and paint.Raflad wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2017 9:37 pmThanks everyone, I'm very pleased to have purchased it. Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
MB-456251 is the engine serial number. I'd love to know the casting date on the engine (and if you remove the oil pan the machining date), That's an early Aug 44 block. It's probably not original to the generator.
167682 may be the serial number of a Jeep it was installed into (as a replacement engine) or the work order # from its installation into the generator.

Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
Seth, thanks for the information. Casting date is either 7-23 or 7-28, can't make the last number out clearly with the photo I have. I'll double check next time I'm there.

Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
Thanks. The close engine that I have in my database was cast 7 - 29 and installed in a Jeep that was delivered on 8/10/1944 so that's in line with what I expected.

Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
Congratulations on your great find! I'm with Chuck---I'd probably clean it up some and leave it alone---it will only look like this once. Not an expert, but I'd say the original paint underneath looks pretty good. Saw where one guy used linseed oil to bring back faded paint without any unwanted shine. Fourteen years ago I bought a nice 44mb and the first thing I did was to disassemble it into a million pieces. wrong. I collected parts for years to do my "restoration". I finally decided to just clean it up and put it back together. Best move I ever made. The only thing I painted was the bolt on's that were missing, and they were "distressed" painted to match the jeep. It's all very straight and had no rust---about the same as your trailer. Just a suggestion. BTW, as I started reading this thread, I was sure that you wouldn't find that "needle in the haystack barn find" but you sure in the heck did. Hat's off to ya. All I can say is you should have bought that lottery ticket .

Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
I appreciate the comments, it is a great trailer. It's pretty much taken apart now and lots of holes need patching, not from rust, but holes made to accommodate the generator that was mounted in it. Lots of oil and grease on the inside, so along with the patching needed I decided to strip the paint. I'll post photos when I'm finished and hopefully I won't have any regrets!

Adam....try a pressure washer on it...start on the underside to see if you can blow off later coats and reveal the OD I suspect is still there....you'll have to be VERY careful if you work on the tailgate as that original USA number should be revealed and not blown away ...try low pressure and work up until you see what it does to the top layer and...to any original OD underneath!

Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
Very nice trailer indeed!
I have a Willy’s MBT # 2569 from 8 -42, frame number 2636.
I am having it restored to battlefield condition, not showroom condition.
We’re you able to recover the USA number off the rear panel or how did you find out the USA number? My trailer did not have the rear panel so I am unaware of what it could be.
Thanks

I was able to recover the USA number off the rear panel. I would imagine yours would be pretty close to mine. Chuck Lutz might be able to help you get an accurate number.

Re: MBT Bantam 1/4 Ton Trailer Values
I have noted that many of the nicer 1/4 ton WWII trailers listed for sale on various websites tend to be in the $2,500.00 range. The tail gate option seems to have been opted for more often than not.

I suggest you check out the craigslist listing shown in that section below as someone put a link to an unrestored one for sale!
