Hello Zeph,
I'm in Brazil, and here there is no Mark 2 model trailer for sale.
So I would like to play one to go to the parades and celebrations.
Could you help me with some measures I need?
Thanks
Alexandre

Hi Zeph, is your bomb trailer the M5? Andy
Hi Andy,

No. Not the M5. It is a Mark II trailer:

I have the bomb sans fins. I just need to figure out how to make those:

This can easy be fixed to a working 3 hole swivvel.....
Image

Jon made the lower one from 3 pieces of 12mm steel and 2 disks of 6mm.

You already have 3 pieces, you only need 2 12mm pcs.

I fixed several myself. Welding in a few bits of cut out 12mm (bend) plate.

I ended up finding a replacement, but that's a great idea.

Hi,

nice to see both hooks facing the same way.....

Image

i can remember mine facing 1 foreward and the other backwards.....

Picture below the hooks are oriented same way and wedges also.
To mount them to the trailer 1 wedge has to face an opposite direction, forcing the hook to turn 180 degree also.

Image

Are there left and right wegde-chain-hooks?? (Not mentioned in the TM-10-1281 or SNL only WO-A-6392 No. Req. 2.)

Think they were produced ad random.

I believe I cut the chains and added some links to make them original looking. At that time I flipped one of the hooks around. When I went to first hook them up, they were too short.

I have 5 couples of original chains oriented in the same way and wedge also from original Willys MBT Early and Bantam too.

Don’t cut them.

Here are my supposed original MBT trailer chains. Just a tad short. I think they shrank over the years:

Image

They did fit like a glove. Only problem was if one wanted to actually turn the vehicle, something would have to give. Not sure what exactly. Most likely the chain itself would have been the weak link...pun intended:

I think I had to redo the one side after I realized the hooks were opposite of each other:

Always hook in from underside.
And tilt the eye-bolts inside a little up.

Should work just fine.

10-4. They were so short, I don't think I could hook them from underneath at that time. Barely reached it with the hook as it was when I shot this photo. They fit fine from underneath after I lengthen the two chains.

Lunette and Chains on Pintle.jpg
When the correct chains are used, there is enough sack in them to attach to the jeep eyebolts and allow for tight turns.

Over the years, guys have "modified" the chain lengths or bought new chain and installed it on wedges and hooks. While they may have the correct 2 long/9 shorter configuration, the measurements for the individual lengths they used can cause the end product to be too short or too long.
Front.jpg
When you have the correct lengths of the two end lengths and the nine middle lengths, the hooks will not reach the ground either.

I displayed my '43 MBT trailer in the local historical society museum for Veterans Day through Christmas. They wanted a little write up on the trailer. I didn't know they would put it in their newsletter. Wrote it in about 3 minutes. Likely not historically accurate:

Great write up on the trailers Zeph !
Well done, clear and concise :D .
Looks like it was a great display event and maybe it sparked some interest by new people interested in WW2 vehicles and their history, to find and restore a trailer or jeep someday.

Best Regards,
Ray
