I think that Dietz was making themselves almost a couple of dozens of different types of lanterns in their New York and Syracuse plants... in NY during WWII... and then in Hong Kong after war...
thus, I would love to have evidence of use of their lantern there and not, maybe, of Coleman's... just for example, as I have and have seen WWII Colemans' in use with the US Army...

Interested to hear there is a plate inside a trailer with K-38 on it, not seen one of those before.
here you have it:

Don't know of any spring differences.

I have different spring on mine from those listed on FWD manual... and so I'd love to know if they were changed later after production (don't think so, as the same OD paint that is as first paint layer on body seems to be on springs too...)

Note the fit of the lantern in the bracket - has anyone found any other lantern that fits the bracket that well?

so, the problem I think is not to hold on making reproductions until tried to fit the lantern, but to find a lantern that fits into the original (and then repro) cages! 8)

Hi Dan,

well.. yes, you can't be 100% sure... but here I have a K-38 dataplate, 1943 made, and a nice 10" white star, both on a single OD layer on red primer... and the OD shade is exactly matchig the samples I saw in years about nos things... so, I have enough elements to say this is a military OD...
about yours ... yes, you're right, you wrote OD... but I think you still have a way to tell if that is a military 319 OD or not... it should be very... faint?...and you should find the red primer immediately below that layer! :D

thank you, by the way... I'm learning a lot about those trailers in these last two days...

Do you have a copy of the tool lists for these trailers? If not I could send a PDF to your email. There are two lists, I believe I have both.

I think we are all learning

I've seen few plates mounted internally, and ( wrongly ) assumed they were civilian use. When I did my original restoration thread virtually all the trailers I saw reference to had Model S on the plate, I think there were only one or two with K-38 stamping. Now in this thread there are a lot more stamped K-38 so the balance changes.

I'd certainly get a hold of a lantern for a trial fit before starting production - I imagine your original guard will have little more clearance than my reproduction. I'll try and tag on an image from the Parts List.

Image

Note it must be an early one with no lantern guard / handle riveted to the lid. I'm sure someone on here last year had an early unit like this with a plain top but can't find the reference now.

( While I'm here, I've come to the conclusion that the drop-down leg stand on the back right corner of mine was to turn it into a work platform. It's quite capable of being stood on as a platform with that rear support dropped down. )

There are 2 lists and they are posted on here. I typed them both out off of Robin Bs original manual. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=173320" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I just realized I never posted the 2nd and will do it tomorrow when on my laptop that has the files

Here is a picture of my restored one viewtopic.php?f=18&t=203379" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; serial number U-90945 and dated 5-13-41 it started life as a Pac Bell trailer I also have either 90933 or 90957 but its missing its data plate but stamped in frame so no date.

Another one I found serial U-90642 and dated 3-7-41 location Arroyo Grande CA in a farm collectors hands

This is from Wp1s post a few years ago My K38 is a Highway Trailer, Date 4-17-1942 and the serial number is U-1575 It was in storage since 1965 and is unmolested other than the lunette changed to a ball hitch many moons ago!

I like the tires on Gordon's image posted earlier. Appear to be NDTs. The manual shows tires similar to what everyone is using.

Mine has FWD cast into the fore little corner pieces on the lid. Also the old dry rotted tires that were on my trailer were Firestone. My repos were exactly the same even the stamping with the wording gum drop was on them.

Hi to all
i would like to point out that french web site miljeep.com is currently updating data for 1/4ton trailer
Part is focused on the T3 modele from Bantam, willys and others manufactors
but other part concern the K38 model

Most of the data for T3 came from French auction sale (you know that many military jeeps and trailers were reused by French Army) so one of the guy from miljeep team, Didier Leger collected data after/during the governement's sales....so information come at the end of life of the trailer (most are French information, as registration number and new serial number as ITM number) but any way . Very good sources for any collectors.
For k38, data came from all over the world
i think that this is good entrie point to increase database.
G503 webmaster could may be contact the guy to link to the database
Hope it will help

find attached the Url

Hi list
the url provided is linked to a data search page , so you just need to select the Manufactor and press submit and data came out
Bantam is per default selected but there is a list of manufactors highway etc..., choose the one you want, submit and result come ...
you could add more criteria to make efficient your research..
