Post by OldScout » Wed Jul 30, 2014 2:47 pm

Here's a '70 A2 for sale. Posting pictures for view/analysis. Picked up this beauty in Amarillo, TX.
Don't have any history; restoration is really well done. Don't see weld marks underneath, but age is evident.
Comes with top,doors,PRC77 backpack w/ant,radio manuals. Radios turn on and make noise-haven't actually used them.
Has clean Texas title along with required inspection sticker -everything current; everything works except gas gauge.
Asking $23,000.00

located in El Paso, TX.

sorry if some pixtures are a little blurry, had to resize them for this post. have many more upon request.

Appears to be in great shape. The underbody views really show a strong unibody with no rust damage.

You might want to tie down that antenna correctly before it becomes a two piece permanently! The tie down goes back by the windshield and attaches to the antenna 2/3 of the way forward, not at the tip. What are the radios on the drivers side fender? I do not recognize them.

I got you on the antenna. Will be good to go at next parade.
Thanks for question regarding radios. Upper unit is a power amplifier aka AM-3349/GRC 106.
Underneath you have a RT 834/GRC 106. Radio Transmitter.

If you don't mind, how about an overall critique? Thick skin so fire away.

Thanks.

No thick skin needed. It seems to be in exceptional condition. No rust that I can see, everything seems to be there. There looks like there is something on the back of the carburetor but I cannot tell from the picture. One thing that caught my eye was no alignment shims in the front suspension. Has it ever been aligned? I am not a radio expert but I believe the long antenna should be on the sugar scoop. Copied from the g838 Wiki, The AS-1729/VRC Antenna consists of the MX-6707 base, AS-1730 lower whip section and the AT-1095 Upper whip section, a tip ball, and tiedown. It mounts on the 3 piece corner antenna mount (sugar scoop). The R-442 receiver would normally use the AB-15/GR antenna. The AB-15/GR Antenna consisted of a AB-15 base (2 piece ball insulator), MS-116A, MS-117A, and MS-118A whip sections. That was usually mounted on a side mount on the passenger side of the vehicle right behind the passenger seat. These two antennas I know about, the other radios/antennas I do not know about. The very early straight M151 had an AB-15 antenna mount on the left rear corner where you have one but it was much smaller and sat flush with the top of the fender. Only used on early 151's and replaced by the side mount.

Thanks for the insight and info. Attaching more photos, hopefully a clearer idea of engine compartment.
I doubt its been aligned. I believe I purchased it seemingly from family cleaning house after grandpa passed. The auctioneer
could only tell me the family wanted to sell it. I got it with 114 miles on odometer and have since put 68 more (mostly parades).
I believe you on the antennas, I'll have to do some research for placement and config. Thanks again.

From what. I can see it is a clean vehicle.
Who ever did the work did a neat job.
The only thing I noticed is that it is not a 1970 vehicle.
I say that because there are side drains.
This would indicate that it would be an AMG A2.
It is an early version because there is no charcoal cannister.
In any event it is a fine example of an A2.
Good luck selling.

Thanks for marksmanship and your expertise. I didn't dare say it was a Ford because of those drains.
I like the feedback prospective sellers receive on this forum, don't think anything else out there compares.
Have to agree, this is a thorough and comprehensive restoration. Wish I could've shaken his hand.

Thanks Fil

Way back when I had restored an early AMG like that without the charcoalcannister and A1 style tank.
Mine was nicely done but not as good as yours.
Gave it away in 2005 for $12,500!!

What a nice example of a jeep radio setup for a Pathfinder unit (70’s 80’s) time frame. The GRC-106 on (driver side) is compatible with the ARC-102 that was used in a number of Aircraft, some being the CH-47, UH-1, U-21, OV1 and others. The GRC-160 or -125 next to R-442 (passenger side) would be used internal to the Pathfinder unit and the R442 receiver could be used to monitor the ground unit that was being supported. That configuration would have been used as the ATC vehicle and my experience with that type configuration the jeep would have been assigned to the Aviation unit. Nice jeep!
