4 cylinder Hercules diesel motor

Post by lester4238 » Wed Mar 07, 2018 7:42 pm

Hi everyone, Just picked up a 4 cylinder Hercules diesel motor. Never seen one before, other than the 3 cylinder gamma goat diesel. This one is dated 1963. What would it have been in? Just found out that it is a DD 198 Hercules.

My research shows it went to some kind of generator. I was thinking of selling it as one piece or would it be better to part it out?

Been thinking about this one.
In all my years of working on farm and industrial engines, don't think I have ever run across a 4 cyl. Hercules diesel engine.
Have had my hands on several 6 cyl. versions in Oliver and White farm tractors.
I would keep it together. Sell it piece at a time and you will have left over parts and no complete engine.

Back in the eighties there was a gentleman Paul Caudell from Indiana selling M-37 Conversions powered by new 4 Cyl Hercules Diesels. It included high speed axle ratio and may have had Michelin Radials.
One of those conversions was used by a gentleman who hauled boats from down south to Nova Scotia.
It was a good mix of M-37 and Diesel and there were plenty of fresh surplus M-37's and mechanical parts to make the conversion worthwhile.

Thanks guy's, I think I will keep together for now. I haven't had a chance to see if it will even turn over. Probably not, but you never know until you try.
