"Hi Jeepers !
I have here a Carter carb which is a mix of several models. The flange
and cover are from a 539S but I have a doubt about the bowl which has an
idle screw, see picture. What do you think ?"

Re: Carter 539s
1. The Choke Housing is standard Post-war Carter. Typically, WO636SA.
2. The Bowl Cover is from a 539S.
3. The Bowl/Main Body is from a WO831S. Foreign export only.
4. The Flange is a 407 from a 539.

Re: Carter 539s
Don't recall ever seeing an adjusting screw on the side of a WO carb. bowl.
I know what my first guess would be, but
What does it adjust ??

Re: Carter 539s
It is a secondary mixture control. It was for foreign export only. I have a couple of worn out units. I hope to find more as I believe they might be useful at elevations above 5K MSL.

Re: Carter 539s
Still a little fuzzy around the edges, S.P.
Secondary to me means another venturi, like the secondary on a four barrel carb.
WO has an idle and a main jet circuit, with one throat and venturi so, ( here comes that word ), I assume the extra adjustment screw works in conjunction with the main jet circuit ??

Re: Carter 539s
Yes. The second mixture adjustment does directly affect the fuel flow through the metering rod jet.
