Re: FOR THE GUNG HO ARMY JEEP ENTHUSIAST
Would a jeep permanently assigned to Private Partz and Corporal Punishment in a Cavalry Squadron even HAVE one? I would assume they would keep their jeep with maybe "Susie Q" stenciled on the side until it died or they did.
I'm sure that some where in The Rear With The Gear that jeeps were signed out for with a trip ticket and returned to the motorpool on a daily or even hourly basis as needed.
Front line GIs were known to toss out all that crap the jeep came with and concentrated on creature comforts, weapons and ammo and such.
Combat situations did not go "By The Book"...

A dispatcher issued the trip ticket. I used to have a few blank trip tickets and typed up examples to keep in my MV Glove Boxes. They are among the missing after 30+ years.

Ahh yes...at the beginning of each shift (even in combat zone areas) we’d perform the inspections on our duty vehicle, note any discrepancies and sign the AF Form 1800. It was a Cardinal Sin if the next shift discovered that you didn’t sign the 1800 during your shift. Every vehicle had to be inspected once per shift, even if it was not used, and it’s 1800 initialed for your shift. As a Flight Chief, I always made sure my cops signed theirs. Our vehicles always saw heavy use...we always kept Vehicle Maintenance busy. Fond memories.....

Re: FOR THE GUNG HO ARMY JEEP ENTHUSIAST
The previous post brought back memories of Joe Nye, Maine's most decorated Viet Nam Veteran Joe spent long months in Army hospitals due to the many wounds and injuries he suffered. He was an Engineer in the 7th Cavalry and used primer cord and other explosives to clear trees to make a landing zone for the helicopters at Ia Drang. Bruce Crandall, MOH was one of the Huey pilots that Joe cleared the trees for. He was on convalescent leave here in Maine and hanging out at friend Ben Buteras Sunoco. I stopped by with my M-38A1 and was surprised to see him. We shot the bull for an hour or so and discussed Jeeps. He commented that he serviced his assigned M-151 with the aircraft grease they used on their Hueys as it was handy when he needed to grease his 151.
