Where’s Tom?

Post by Michael O. » Thu Dec 21, 2017 8:13 am

Has anyone noticed that Tom hasn’t posted on here for quite some time? His expertise and wealth of knowledge is definitely missed!

Michael, I thought the same thing a while back. I went to the members list, click on his name and checked his posts. He had current posts on here at that time. The reason I looked is because of the thread that read "How many jeeps survived the war" or something like that. I commented to check with Tom and his data base.

He has only three posts in the last 6 months, with his last two on 26 NOV 17. He used to be much more active.

Tired of the BS generated when he posts answers based on FACTUAL DOCUMENTATION from the Ford/Benson archives. Tired of petty pissing matches based on someone's recollections of post-war jeeps and the lack of follow through when people are challenged by those FACTS and refuse to supply FACTS to support their opposition to his posts.

Like other knowledgeable jeep guys who have cut down on their gee participation or just quit posting....they are sorely missed.

Yeah, but a lot of us do not need another layer of social media bugging us 24/7. No FB, no Twitter, no Instagram, etc.....a much calmer existence. Hey if the internet itself with email spamming the bejesus outta you isn't enough, people can just pick up the phone to bug me.

,,,and they do, like "Jessica Jones" did yesterday...English with a distinct Mumbai accent and the tell-tail clicking in of her call-center routing though a fake area code and the same prefix as my cell phone.

or...the guy on Monday who when he told me Microsoft had detected a virus on my computer did when I told him I sold it....and immediately hung up.
or...last week the guy who hung up when I told him that the other guy who called the day before had "fixed" it already.
or...the one who I explained I was wary of calls about turning over control of my computer to and preferred to contact Microsoft directly about the issue. He wanted to give me a number to call and his name to ask for...but who hung up when I told him I would just contact Microsoft using their OWN Customer Service number.
or...the one where I told him I was tired of scams, con men, shysters and thieves calling me up and told him we were not falling for all the calls so he should take us off the list and save their time for ripping off other people...all the while he was yelling "F**K YOU, F**K YOU, F**CK" in the background until I hung up.
Sometimes I just ask them to let me get a pen and paper and go take a leak or reload the paper in my printer while I set the phone down. Hey, burns up their time, not mine.

Can't wait for the "IRS" to call and demand a money order be sent to someone in Nigeria...within 3 hours or they would break down my door and arrest me. First thing you do with them is ask what address they currently show for you and your SS number.

Kinda makes you long for the simpler days when all they wanted to do was to share several million dollars with you if you would only send them a couple thousand so they could make the transfer or something.

I enjoy reading the lively discussions on here. Its always a shame when someone chooses to depart. I've never met Tom but admire his knowledge and dedication to the hobby.
With that said the only thing that turns me off is personal attacks. if FACTS are all that matters, then no personal attacks should happen right
THIS IS NOT DIRECTED AT ANYONE IN PARTICULAR. My thing is some "experts" don't like to be challenged. Some peoples facts are really assumptions as none of us were in WW2 for example. this is a "discussion board" Nicht Wahr?

Now, now Chuck. Take a deep breath and count to ten.
If it is any consolation, I don't do face book, etc. either.
I don't even have a cell phone.
All I have is a land line with advanced caller ID. If I don't recognize a local call or an out of area call, I may or may not answer it. Depends on the advanced I.D. data, the mood I am in and/or what I am doing at the time.
Those that know me are aware of this.
As for Tom, I hope he hangs in there. He has a wealth of knowledge and has been great about sharing it with all of us.
I know he got upset about some of the flack he was getting a while back. So have others.
Being thick skinned is an asset.
Just shrug off the B.S. and move on !

Chuck you and Wolfman sound a lot like me. No Fakebook or any of the Twatter crap..and the newest phone call was to my father in law. It came from the same area code and prefix as my phone. The caller sounded like my son and knew my father in laws address (my sons' granddad). He claimed to be my son in jail in Mexico and needed an immediate wire transfer to stay free or it would be three weeks before he could see a judge. My father in law called me to ask why Tyler was in Mexico. I explained to him that I (let alone my son) did not remember his address and that my son was here in OKC and I had just had lunch with him. There is a special place waiting for the guys and gals that prey on the elderly....Just saying.

Tom has always been receptive to all my questions, and I read him giving away info and data all day long on facebook.
His research and database are incredible; and his personal dedication to the hobby and to the hobby people is even more impressive.

It would be a shame to see him get off the web board; and I think we should all remember that his work isn't free in time and money; and that it deserves all the help; funding; or even just "thank you" that one can give.
