strange places to drive a jeep

Post by 1943Willysgpw » Thu Nov 09, 2017 11:22 am

So, I drove my jeep into a drainage pipe going under the road. Anyone have stories or pictures of strange places they took their jeep?

No photos im afraid, but i guess my strangest place to drive my jeep was the local crematorium. A very good friend of mine who also had a jeep sadly and prematurely passed away. Being well known on the military preservation circuit, many friends turned up in their WW2 vehicles as a last farewell. There was 10 jeeps there, plus Dodges and GMCs. It was most spectacular. A woman who was walking by approached me and asked " Has some top army general passed away" ? This bought a smile to my face on what was a sad day. My friend would have loved it. R.I.P. Charlie.

Around the outside or our local cricket pitch at the village fete a year ago giving rides to members of the public. It was good fun TBH, weather was great with lots of smiling faces and several had more than one ride. Raised £140 ish for charity as well :)

First of all, I offer my condolences for your loss. Secondly you are so right about the gathering. When I take my jeep into town, I get everything from guys my age telling me they drove one in the army too "is that an old forestry jeep?"

Beats the crap out of having a bake sale. Good fundraiser.

No pics.
The CJ-2a I have now, came from a hunters club that had a cabin in the U.P. of Michigan.
Every time I see one of them, they have some story to tell about their adventures at the cabin in the old jeep.
The one that comes up the most often is driving the jeep across the wooden truss bridge to get across the river, stream or what ever it was, to the other side and back.
No floor on the bridge. Just rails and ties. Pretty rough ride.
Seems they pulled up to one side. Shut the engine down. Listened to see if there was a train coming and once they decided the coast was clear, they hopped the rail and across they went.
You have to know these guys. A collection of school teachers. Judges (2). Factory workers, farmers, and a car mechanic, ( one of the farmers son in law ), who thought it was fun to get away to " God's Country " for a break. The " Odd Couple " times several on steroids !
Good news is, I have the jeep and considering all this, it is a little banged up but in pretty good shape.
It is on my list of things to rebuild but I am driving it around the farm for now.
Worst thing. One of the farmers was also a school bus driver and the group decided to paint the jeep " School Bus Yellow" so the deer hunters would see them and not shoot at them. I guess it worked. I have not found any bullet holes ! 8)

I took a wrong turn headed to the sanitary land fill on a military base with an M-38A1 towing an M-100 that took me thru a bushy area that had Dusters popping out of the brush and crossing to my front and too my rear. Seems so I found a way past the signs warning of tank maneuvers that day.

In the 1970s I saw a wartime Jeep in a marshalling yard in Italy. It was running on the rails on adapted wheels, and presumably used in some kind of shunting operation.

There is a rail road museum in Noblesville that bought a section of rail line that runs from Noblesville to my home town of Tipton.
Once a week, the Pizza train comes to town to the Pizza Shack by the tracks. Brings people to town for dinner on a passenger train. Pretty popular.
Some time there is a group that has motorized rail road service trolleys that make the trip in there " Putt Putts ". That is what I call them.
I keep watching for someone to show up in a jeep on rails, but so far, No Joy!
Maybe some day.
