HENRY J HEAD

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Oct 22, 2017 4:34 pm

The head is off my MB for a couple days. Am thinking about installing that NOS 7.00:1 Head I have been saving.
One part of me says do it, the other part says leave it original. It's my GPW engine that I installed NOS and it has plenty of zip in stock condition. The engine "talked" to me, I checked compression, it was 70-118-118-118 an exhaust valve had just started to burn.

Yes, I know.
I have put 18000 Miles on the GPW engine and it has been one of the peppiest L-134 powered Jeeps I have ever driven. I have a zero time L-134 Willys engine assy. stored as a spare, maybe I'll put the Hi Compression head on it let it set.

With a burnt valve in only 18,000 miles, make sure you are setting the valve lash to the proper adjustment.
A burnt valve is usually caused by the valve lash being set to tight, not allowing the valve to completely close.

You are correct, Roy. The #1 Exhaust Valve was tight The seats looked like they were ground yesterday.

When I rebuilt mine back in January last year amongst the usually machining work I had 1 mm taken off the cylinder head which I believe takes to comp ration up to the dizzy heights of 7 to 1 :)
There is a noticeable increase in torque which makes it even more fun to drive, albeit my engine was fairly tired before the rebuild.
4000 ms later its pulling even better.

And it should. Am going to save the HJ head for when I install a "zero time" MB engine .that has a post war short block. Has been my spare since the 70's, may never need it, but it is there just in case.. The GPW engine was a new July 45 dated crate engine, it has performed fine, with no leaks or oil consumption since 71. All it has ever had done to it are fresh Oil Lines, and a NOS AC late 70's early 80's dated AC pump with primer and one set of points. Somehow good PM did not save the valve.
