French (Desoutur) distributor

Post by Jeff Glasser » Tue Sep 26, 2017 6:04 am

I have a brand new distributor still in its box. There is a decal on the body which reads-

12497.24 (top rh corner in small numbers)

then- WOF
A 9075
Distributeur
G503 770? 808

then in bottom lh corner- 12/61

Can anyone enlighten me on this? it looks identicle to the standard Autolite type distributor apart from the attachment bolt for the LT lead is in the body itself.
Sorry if posted in the wrong place! Jeff'.
There I was, upside down with nothing on the clock but the makers name!

Dec 1961 produced WOF distributor. Is it the 4008 type?

IAD-4008 was the late war style and it was taller than the IGC-4705 (early style).

I can't view your photos....can you just upload them to this server?

Sorry Marty, tried posting earlier but couldn't find the 'reply' thingy, so doing it like this. I've also sort of posted the photo's.

Could this distributor be used in a jeep that is still 6 volt? if not, what would have to be changed.

Jeff'.

Should work fine with 6 volts. I would clean the points contacts with alcohol or contact cleaner, oil the felt under the rotor and add a bit of grease to the rubbing block on the points before you run it.

The round hole in the side of the housing for the electrical connection is another 4008 difference from the 4705.

To follow up....yes, as Marty said, looks like a knock off of the IAD-4008. Freshen it up as Marty said and you should be on the road. I'd remove (or paint over) the decal so it has a more correct appearance.

Thanks guys, most helpful.
It can stay in its original box for now, it's well padded and quite snug. The original dizzy on my jeep is working fine so if it aint broke, don't fix it I think.
Of course I'm curious as to what a new distributor like that would cost these days, any ideas?
