Newbie looking at 1943 gpw

Post by Justkysor » Tue Sep 19, 2017 9:12 am

Aloha
My name is Justin. I am looking at a 1943 gpw in the next few days and I am new to military Jeeps.
The owner is asking $3k and says the transmission stays in gear, little rust (we will see), needs brake master cylinder rebuilt and brake lines replaced (owner has parts to do this job).
Is there anything I should be keeping any eye out for?
As in specific areas for rust and rot.
Any info would be helpful,
Thanks

First I would do a inventory of parts that are missing or would need to be replaced on the jeep. Many parts missing leads to many dollars spent buy replacements. As for looking for rust or rot in the tub, the hat channels underneath the jeep are one place to look a long with the floors above the hat channels. Good luck with it. -Tate

If you can take pictures of underhood, body (all four sides and top)and under the vehicle, that would be a start. Take close ups of the bolts, axles and other Ford marked critical parts listed on this link. http://jeepdraw.com/PART_COLOURS.htm. Once you get the pictures, post them on here. The guys are not shy when it comes to telling you if you have the right components in the correct spots. It will save you a lot of time, money and head aches. I have bought and sold parts I did not need due to my lack of research of the threads on this site. I was very glad to find this forum. Hope this helps.

Well Justin you would do well to keep in mind that a fully restored gpw goes for between 20 and $25,000. If the owner is asking $3,000 unless he's a complete idiot or doesn't know what the value of the vehicle is you have about 10% of a Jeep there meaning you will likely have to buy or rebuild 90% of that jeep. A reasonably good shape gpw body alone will cost you more than $3,000. I'm guessing it's a little more than a rolling Hulk and unless you are Equipped do a complete rebuild you may want to look for something less challenging

Post pics. Could be a steal at 3k or a money pit.

Cal is correct. It does take a skill set and the perseverance to overcome all obstacles. That is why Chuck and I stated post pictures. The forum team can tell you if it is a "Hulk" or worth while. Don't be discouraged because there are some good ones out there that are super reasonable. I got GPW 1871 for under 2000. Or you could buy this beauty....... :( :o :o http://www.ebay.com/itm/1943-Ford-GPW-W ... dy&vxp=mtr

Run, don't walk to go buy it... :) If you are looking for a decent project that is.

Buy it! If I could get my brother to store it for me at his house on Oahu then I would consider buying it. Don't wait too long or it will be gone!

Great candidate. What is there looks to be a great start. If you drive it as is, I think it is well worth the money. To restore it, I already see some $ you would need. Here is hoping it has period correct engine, trans, and running gear. Need combat wheels, front bumper/gussets, top bows and windshield from first glance. Also the locking hub on the front axle is not correct.

Being how the OP started with Aloha....I am assuming he is from HI. But, if he is on one of the other islands... it could be expense unless you rig it with a fording kit.
