Great story, Thank you for sharing.
It seems that Jeep contributed to the peace and the joy a lot as well.

I was also a participant of the Jeep Meeting at Tegernsee. My GPW is the Marine Corps in Forest Green which can be seen on some photos.
It was a great event even when looking at Opas smiling face.

Any time you can get 28 old jeeps together has got to be a good time. Doing a favor for the grandfather is icing on the cake! :D
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?
Alone cannot you it resist!

Hello,
What a great event there !!
So nice that the German and Austrian Jeepers could take the German man for a long jeep ride , a great story !!
The area is one of the most scenic in the world, a most beautiful part of Germany .
What a way to travel....would be nice to drive jeeps all over Bavaria !!
That part of Germany is made for jeeps :D
If I ever get my jeep to Germany, that would be an objective !

Wow, this is a great story. Reminds me of my friend who was born in Tunisia in 1939, during Nazi occupation, and can vividly recall allied jeeps after the German's were pushed out of the country. He said the sight of those jeeps stuck with him so much that he built a love from them and eventually bought a surplus MB after moving to Paris years later. Now he's in D.C. and has another MB (with paperwork proving it was returned from France  ). The OD/flat fender addiction is fascinating to me. I cannot imagine being in Europe during the war and having seen jeep up close and personal, though. I'm sure that makes the love/connection to old war jeeps much more personal than what many of us feel.

A really nice story but a bit sad giving up cars because of that one early disappointment. Thank heavens his first girlfriend gave him a kiss...
I'm curious about the jeep model. Dinky jeeps were made from 1946 onwards (the 153A model) so I'm wondering what make or model could have been for sale in Germany around 1945. Of course it's possible he's got the timeline a bit screwed.
Some really good photos too. Some nice jeeps there. I like the details on some of the dashs. The pack of Luckys and the photos stiffed in the date plate.
Nice rowing boat too !
