What tyre size to use on gpw
So thinking of throwing the cat amongst the pigeons here. So forgetting originality what would be best to use on a jeep, 600x16 or 700x16 tyres? My gpw arrived with 700x16s and I like the look but thinking practically what would be best for general day to day driving. I have always had big tyres on my Land Rovers so like the look of bigger tyres and the added bonus of raising the gearing slightly and ground clearance.
Did the military in ww2 ever fit 700x16s to jeeps?
Thanks in advance for your in put
Regards

Hi Daren, an observation here, not advice. I have never seen a restored jeep here in England without 600-16 tyres. Im pretty sure the bigger size came in, although not standard, in early 1945. Hope this helps.

Re: What tyre size to use on gpw
There is a desert coloured Jeep around my area that apart from having RHD conversion sits on 7 x 16 tyres. It is quite noticeable but not ridiculously so. I have thought about putting a set on my original Hotchkiss wheels for when I go off roading, but have heard that on extreme axle articulation the larger tyre can foul the body ??????????

Re: What tyre size to use on gpw
Hello,
On my 1943 GPW, I have 600 x 16 NDT tires. On my 1945 CJ 2I have 700 x 16 NDT with the square shoulder, not the typical round shoulder,as seen on the later mutt's. Having the taller tire on the CJ is somewhat like an overdrive, the rpm's are lower at cruising speed, even with the different differential gear ratio of the 2A. The 700x16 square shoulder look better in my opinion than the round shoulder version.
It is your jeep, so do what you wish,
Frank

I put these on my Land-Rover, bigger rolling radius, great for mileage, but a bear on hills.

Re: What tyre size to use on gpw
Daren, i found a reference in the JEEP book by Emile Becker (an excellent book by the way, especially now its printed in English)about tyre sizes. It said "After the installation of the T1 compressor on the JEEP, the 6.00x16-6ply wheels have to be changed to 7.50x16-6 ply in order to respect the idea of "Kit, tire, cross-country". Hope this helps.

Hi all, still not sure which way to go, off to War and Peace this week so may get some inspiration there, as well as lots of goodies.

Re: What tyre size to use on gpw
Daren,
If your into rock-crawling or that Bubba look, I'd go with the larger tires, if you want your jeep to look like it did during WW-2 stick with the 6.00 x 16's.
Their is no way to make it look any better then a WW-2 jeep the way they came, it's all about the history of the jeep and WW-2.
The good thing about it is that it's your jeep, and you can put what ever size you think look's best.

Thanks Jab, that's a good thread. And I really like the look of the 7.50s. Food for thought.
