RESTORATION *GPW-247 024* (1945) in France !

Post by Division Leclerc » Mon Mar 06, 2017 11:28 am

[*]Hello everyone

Image

I just joined today the G. :D
I'm from France and am a happy owner of a Ford GPW since a couple of weeks.
Serial Number 247024 , Date of delivery January 19, 1945.

Considering my (original) dataplates, I assume that it has been buit in Ford assembly Plant in Dallas, Texas :

Would some of you have any idea about an estimated registration number ? :?: According some estimation and databases, I believe that it could be between 205 98000 and 206 02000. I figure as reasonnable 20599100 to be close to reality.

Dataplates, frame, engine (built December 29, 1944) have matching number 247 024.
Grill, gear and auxiliary boxes, axles, and many small parts are originals from the car.
The Jeep has never been in French Army. Sold in France after war, has seen years of service in a Wine-grower of East-France until 80's.
Restored between 1995/2005. It's currently 12V working with a 80's Bosch alternator. Engine works perfectly.

For your consideration, here are some pics  :

Sadly , a previous owner throwed the tub and fenders, for a cheap-quality repro.
With the car, I got some spares, mainly Ford stamped: axles front and rear, Hood ,fenders, crank engine, generator, etc...
I plan currenty to remove the jeep to its original 1945 condition ! Lots to do !

Thanks for your interest. To be continued !

Nice looking GPW. Looks like a nice driver. Too bad about the original sheet metal. It's terrible when guys scrap most of a jeep's originality. Congratulations on your new jeep.

Hi everyone and thanks Gi and Michael for your replies.

My first restoration work I project is the hood.
Since I'm not a great mechanic, I guess that would not be too difficult !

On my GPW, the hood is obviously a WOF one: it is about 1 cm (0.4 inch) longer than an US ones , and the hinge is different.
The good news is that the previous owner has gave me an original GPW hood, well F stamped. It comes from French Army and has still a NATO camo paint.

Pictures to come !

Before beginning the work, I'am asking myself someting: I know that the lubrication chart holder was added under MBs hoods in December 1944, but not if the same for GPWs on assembly lines at the same period ?
Should I install a lube-chart holder for a January 1945 GPW ?

Thanks for your help !

Thanks your all for your comments !

I add some new pics today:

Engine and frame numbers, if you have sharp eyes :

Engine cast number : L2941, that means december 29, 1944. It's consistent with the DoD of the car, January 19, 1945.

Waht do you think of the Carter carburator ? The bowl doesn't have any patents.

Hi everyone

A long time since the last post ! :?

In fact, until now and waiting for to really begin the work, my priority is to gather all the missing parts I need.
I am lucky to find many original Ford parts on my car.

This is a nice take-off Ford left fender I have to restore : overall shape is quite good, but many extra-holes to fill :

Still missing a right fender !
