Re: Peace's restoration project
My steering wheel on the jeep turned out to be a french or CJ type, with black colored ring. Not suitable for a 44MB. I managed to trade it for the steering wheel seen earlier in the posts. My friend Luc can use it, but wanted it to be very nice. I did some cosmetic work to the steel and special kind of black rubber to make it look nice again.
From that same friend, I got a nice corcoran reflector. It has the correct Grotelite 100 lense insert, but unfortunately it is broken. Nonetheless, I only need 2 more Corcoran bezels!
This week I sourced 6 Grotelite 100 inserts, in good condition, via Ebay. They are on their way to me. So that is the lenses sorted at least.
Still working on getting a complete set of CB marked marker lights. I have found quite a lot of Fords, but no complete CB's yet... The hunt continues!
Here is the steering wheel, together with the -now 2- Corcoran reflector bezels.
I hope my posts are somewhat interesting to read? It's kind of messy, no real chronology or plan. I just post as I go along. I hope it't not too boring to read.
Kind regards,
Stijn

Re: Peace's restoration project
This evening I tested my fuel gauge. It doesn't work unfortunately. After inspection, it seems that someone already tried to open it up, but quit half way, so I wasn't really surprised it didn't work.
After opening it up, I noticed one of the wires from the one of the coils wasn't connected to their respective post. It obviously had a grounding issue, since their was corrosion on the case, inside.
Using the exellent guide by Elwoodjayblues, I was able to do what was needed to repair the gauge. I measured the values at the posts, and the grounding. It all checks out fine now. Happy days!

Motometer speedo just needed a cosmetic update. All good to go now.
Also refurbished some Autolite fuel gauges. One wasn't salvageable, but served as a donor, so 3 others could live.
Evening well spent I think

Re: Peace's restoration project
After more then a few hours, the steering wheel is finally finished. I discussed putting back the lines, as seen with NOS examples, but this would be impossible, since no stering wheel is actually 'true'.
I used a donor wheel for the plastic material. It is absolutely neccessary to perform a good cleaning of the surface that needs to be treated. It needs to be totally free of contaminants. With ample amounts of acetone, this can be achieved. the deep nooks and crevices were chased with a dremel cutting wheel, to again ensure a clean surface. If you don't do this, some ghosting may appear in the finish.

Re: Peace's restoration project
Finally had some time to take care of the grille.
I applied the correct tinning where needed, taped off and then primer.
Tried out my new spraygun too. Very nice to work with!

Re: Peace's restoration project
Also,
I had some time this weekend to do some work on the rear lights. I had a mix of lights lying around in various states of disrepair.
2 complete right rear lights, ILC, Industrial Lamp Company. Don't know where these fit in in the jeep world, but they were cheap and correct. One is NOS, the other had rust. couldn't bring myself to blast it completely, so I just blasted the rusted parts, and blended the new paint in with the old. The rear left lamp is Guide, came from a GPA, and was donated by my good friend Luc. It was sandblasted because it was very rusty and had multiple paint layers. Cleaned up real nice.

Hi Mark,
the bearded woman is actually a mannequin I painted up myself. I'll put up a more decent picture of it, when I can )
Thanks for the nice feedback!

Re: Peace's restoration project
After a trip to the States, I finally had some to time to do some painting. During my trip, the compressor got fixed, so there was nothing in the way to do a good paint job. The weather held out this sunday, so it was prepping time. After the primer was applied, I was finally able to apply the OD layer on a good batch of parts.
Here are both fenders. They have been sandblasted, rotten pieces cut out, and somewhat straightened. As you can see, some denting is apparent. This will remain.
And to finish off, an artsy picture my girlfriend took. She tought it looked cool, in the moonlight.
The work in and around the engine bay is slowly coming to a close. I am only lacking a left headlight bracket, willys air horn and a oil filter bracket. I would change the radiator to a more correct example, I'd even consider a Ford one, but I can't find one!
Next step will be cleaning up the engine side of the firewall. Hole identification, closing up the unwanted holes, and then a full repaint. Then I can start thinking about wiring, horn attachment and air filter installation.
Wiring kit has been aquired, Oakes airfilter has been found, as was all the other parts for air filtering (exept air horn). Also found a suitable horn, from Peter in Australia. Those parts are still on their way.
Cheers,
Stijn
Kind regards,
Stijn
