What a great last weekend and a good start to the week! Rebuilt the distributor I picked up from a fellow 'G' member. Put in new shaft bushings and and new springs in. Last night started rebuild of the oil pump and finished it up tonight. Distributor and oil pump installed tonight too! Also got the exhaust all hooked up.

I'm terrible about taking pictures so maybe tomorrow... :D

Man, things seem to be going well here lately. Would love to try and have the old girl running by its 'birthday' of March 12th. If I can at least make it in that month, I'll be happy!!!! :) :) :)

So last post I said things were going well? Well I must of jinxed myself. Went to install and hook the gas pedal to the accelerator linkage and it wouldn't even come close. Doing a little research and I installed the linkage plate upside down! :x :x

Body is bolted down and pretty thin space between the engine and firewall....

I've read about this happening often enough that if I ever take mine off, I'm marking the heck out of it!
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?

Yeah, guess I missed the memo! :D It was a struggle to undo but only took a few minutes to re-install. One problem solved!

Finally trudging forward, again..... :D

Great evening tonight. Picked up a battery the other night, got some oil tonight. Prepped the motor cranked it over to check oil pressure and it came up and stayed steady. :D I think I'm about ready to give it some gas and fire it up! :D :) :D :)

Well, made my first attempt to start it this evening. Not a total success but did get a few backfires out of the carb. So....need to let the battery charge a bit before I try it again.

Since it is backfiring, is it timing issue? Is the distributor to far advanced or not enough? At this point I'm in uncharted water when it comes to this stuff.

With today being my jeep's 71st birthday, figured it would be a good day to attempt to start it since the motor was rebuilt. Struggled all day, sluggish cranking....seemed like things weren't going well. Could get it to try and stumble with starting fluid but wouldn't stay running. Was letting the battery charge a bit and decided to check the intake side for any leaks so started checking any and every nut and bolt. In the process, snapped a stud in the intake/exhaust. :x Removed the carb so I could pull the manifolds. Pull the carb off and see antifreezes in the bottom of the intake..... :? :? At this point I'm upset/pissed/let down/defeated.... Yanked the head off. #2 and #3 were wet (more evidence of fluid in those two since I had antifreezes all over the place with removing the head. At a quick glance, I can see all the studs were sealed except for the one by the #2 intake valve and the #3 intake valve. Heck I almost was able to remove the stud by #2 by hand! So my assumption is it was sucking/leaking fluid from those two studs?

Also have to attempt to remove what is left of the stud.

Not a good Birthday for the ol' Gal......

Nick, sorry to read about your set back.We all have them...sounds like you have the cause of it figured out at least. The broken stud doesn't look too bad to get out-
After it's back together and you're try to start it......it helped me to have the distributor loose enough to hand-turn while cranking.Since backfiring can be a timing issue, you could recheck the dizzy-to-oil pump orientation.Mine was a tooth off and would not start until the dizzy was turned counter-clockwise to where the oiler was touching the block. When the timing is right & with a good battery-It really ought to start with a little gas down the carb.Looks like you are real close...

It was a very frustrating day but this weekend made up for it. Sealed the two studs, slapped a new head gasket on and managed to get the stud out and replaced. I also took the time to remove my oil pump and re-time the distributor so the #1 position was in the correct spot. Sunday (3/20/16) hooked everything up, primed the carb with the fuel pump, a little starter fluid down the carb and she sputtered to life! Was very happy! Had good oil pressure and temp was good. Couple of minor oil leaks from fittings and a seam leak on the radiator but not bad. Hopefully the troubles are behind me!

Good to see you got her back on her feet Nick! That is a bit frustrating, but you took lemons and made lemonade. Nice work! 8)

I GOT TO DRIVE MY JEEP TODAY! :D :D Okay, I backed it out of the garage and down my driveway and drove it back up (100 feet or so....)  But it counts right? Still working on getting it to idle. Can't keep it going at an idle. Still minor tweaking to carb and timing and I think I'll be okay. Sadly my flywheel is 180 off so I don't have timing marks to use.

Couple of issues. When I push in the clutch and put it into 1st gear, it grinds, same with reverse, not bad but shouldn't be doing that. I assume I need to adjust the linkage more?

I need to pull the radiator as I have a small leak on the driver side at the seam. That should be easy to fix.

After having it run for about 20-30 mins today, started leaking from the front pulley nut spraying everything with a light mist of oil. So off with the nut and put some sealer in there. Been reading a few topics on here and sounds fairly easy to do and since I have to pull the radiator, perfect timing to do it.

Little set backs but that's okay. Still moving forward so I won't complain.

Nick,one small step...it is a fine feeling isn't it...
Re grinding issue:
Jeep stopped, engine running, gears in neutral, clutch out (engaged)...a driver must disengage(push in) the clutch and do a 3 count to allow the cluster to coast to a stop.
Only then he can shift into first gear. Some go briefly to second to make the synchronizers to halt the input drive.
T/O Brng to fingers should be around 1/16th,it should not turn in neutral, clutch out(engaged) ,engine running...

This has to be one of the longest restoration jobs on the G....  Life has kept me away for a bit but tinkered here and tinkered there the last few months.

Seemed to fix the radiator leak (fingers crossed it stays that way.....) Had to pull the front nut off the crank to seal it as it was spraying oil. My rebuilt carb was having issues. Found the throttle linkage was loose on the shaft. Replaced that and can finally get it to keep a constant RPM. It seemed there was always something wrong that needed attention. But as of yesterday, It fires right up, idles great and gave it a quick spin down the block and back! :D

I think I finally am on the down hill slope to getting this finished up!

Got the driver side fender fixed up and on:

And, have power to the headlights (the one at least)

This I am excited about. Picked up the metal covered (reproduction) speedometer cable. It is beautiful, just like what I remember the original was like!

Image

Image

Just need to get the fuel gauge in and the dash will be done.

The wife even got to start it and pull it in the garage. She was grinning ear to ear. :D

It was a good weekend. Hope to have many more!
