Re: Zeph's '42 Ford GPW
Congratulations on reaching the 100,000 Zeph, your posts have been of much interest to many of us so thanks again and please carry on. I look forward to following your work on the Dodge.
You will remember we discussed Little Zeph, but the distance was too great.
Some months ago when a friend saw me outside my house with my MB he said there was a lady living locally who had a jeep in her garage. It belonged to her husband but very sadly he died some years ago. Anyway, yesterday I finally got round to walking five minutes from my house to go and see it. I wasn't expecting much as it could have been anything but was amazed to see a very good '42 GPW with original brass plates and a four digit serial number, last moved over ten years ago. Amazing to find that this has been just around the corner from me for all that time. Not for sale, sadly, but I can live in hope!
All the best
Gordon

Thank you Gordon. Yes I remember. That is a great story and hopefully a "great find" one of these days. It never ceases to amaze me how these G503's keep popping up over and over. A real testament of how well they where loved and enjoyed over the past 70 plus years!Gbcygnet wrote:Congratulations on reaching the 100,000 Zeph, your posts have been of much interest to many of us so thanks again and please carry on. Happy day. After all this time I have finally accumulated enough WWII Jeep lug nuts. As I worked in the shop over the past year I kept finding a lug nut here and a lug nut there... Actually, I am short one right hand thread lug nut, but I have a couple deeper/taller ones I found. Same lug size, but just a little different in height...I can use one of those until I find the last one. I sandblasted, primed and painted in OD today. Now all ready for installation:Niblet wrote:Awesome shots Zeph! (still havent painted those lug nuts yet eh??)

I keep looking at the blue drab numbers barely visible under the white ones and wonder just how often white numbers were just painted over the blue ones, only to become quite invisible on those old B/W pictures of WW2...

Great job, John!
It's interesting. Every time I see a vintage photo of a WWII Jeep, I look for evidence of blue drab under the white numbers. The blue drab numbers really blend in when a photo is taken. I think I had read that the use of blue drab registration numbers prevented them from being photographed from 75 feet away. Seems to work at about 15 feet away. Of course, it all depends on lighting, etc... I'm glad I did it this way and would imagine that it happened more than it is popularly believed.
Cheers,
John

John,
Jerry up here in Anderson ! Just want to let u know I opened a small museum in Redding. I have six vehicles there now, three inside, and three outside. Also have WW2 collectibles and uniform displays set up. Come by and visit, it's open every day, but I'm not there all the time. Located at 5360 Westside in Redding, about half mile north of Bonnyview. Busy getting couple restorations done of MVPA in August. Talk later

I used the TM9 Ordinance Blue Drab for my GPW hood numbers. Rattle can. Here is their website: http://www.tm9ordnance.com/Bertu wrote:Hi Zeph! I am jus finishing my GPW '44 and I would like to ask you what blue color you have used ... I will paint my numbers next week.

Re: Zepher's new(to me) '42 Ford GPW
I'll be going for the later restoration. I'm not that anal so to speak on restoring a GPW. I want to make it look good but it will have that used look to it. Personally it's about keeping the WWII jeeps visible to the public and not to forget this great vehicle.Tom wrote:This definition only holds true if the era an owner is portraying the vehicle in is WW2. A Motorpool Class restoration can be done to any era that a like vehicle has been found in over these many years.Motorpool class. everything is either MB or GPW parts from 1942-1945 and doesn't have to be numbers matching, but no postwar or incorrect parts.
To myself there can be at least two motorpool restorations. Big "M" Motorpool class restoration for judging / displaying. Or little "m" motorpool / civilian restoration for anything goes that the owner is happy with to make the vehicle operational.
