Decyphering jeep markings

Post by Daren » Tue Sep 19, 2017 1:25 pm

Hello All,
I am getting to the stage of fine details on the jeep, I have no history except the chassis number so have estimated a hood number, I am now trying to decide what other vehicle markings to add and how to create them so they look authentic.
I have chosen the 1st infantry division as my chosen division (The Big Red One, see.myself as a bit of a Lee Marvin together with a big fat cigar) as they fought all the way through the Africa and European theaters from 42/43 to the end, visiting most of the more dramatic combat zones so I could have a choice of different "role plays" to choose from, be it Africa, Italy or the Ardennes.
So how can I create the correct vehicle markings for this division, I am stuck at the beginning, not being to find out which army group they fought under.
Any help with how to make up theark ings will be much appreciated
Regards

Here's a start.

Best thing is to find an WW2 photo of a 1 ID jeep with visible markings and copy those, or at least base your markings on them. It seems that at least for D-Day they had some special markings.

When you picked a unit within the 1st ID I might be able to give you more info about it.

Hi David, I have decided on 1st Army Infantry, 16th Battalion Reconnaissance. Dog company 15th vehicle.
So it'll look a little like this I think.
1-16R-I star D-15
Now I have read that the some of the sequence may have been in Romania numerals so could it also look like this
1-XVIR-I star D-15
But that looks a little cluttered. I don't mind loosing the R in the sequence if it looks more authentic.
Any thoughts?

I think you are now mixing 2 separate units; the 16th Infantry Regiment and the 1st Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized?

Ooh I didn't know there was a 1st reconnaissance mechanised, I will have to research them now.
I'm new to this militarily fun and just getting my head round things is tricky.
Thanks

Ah that would be a distinct possibility. I'm new to the militaria side of vehicles and am finding it quite confusing.
I will research the 1st reconnaissance and see what they looked like.
I have a certain image of what I want my jeep to look like but want it to be reasonably accurate.
Any thoughts and comment are much appreciated
