Mike,

As far as my (limited) carburetor knowledge goes, this carb is not a NOS but a recently made copy of the Zenith.

I once fighted against this flat spot and as part of it, another G-member borrowed me exactly such a carb. It did behave worse than any other random take-off carb.

I am not trying to say that your carb is bad, just my experience. If you don't get rid of your flat spots, try another carb, preferably the early (non-emission) type and compare. As you know it is a matter of a few minutes to exchange them and then do a test drive.

Thanks for the info and I will remember that if I can't find anything else wrong :D

I partially stripped an old plug lead today to take the stroboscope for the ignition timing. It was a little out but not too bad. I also re-set the valve clearances. It seems to pull ok, at least up to around 35mph. I'll have to wait 'til I'm legal before I can get any more speed!

Hi,

I cut the last 50mm off the ends of the MUTT wiper arms and welded on the last 50mm from some modern ones I got from a scrap car. This means they now take standard fittings. I hate the flappy single blade type which always look as though they're about to fall off. No one's ever noticed that my Ward Lafrance has modern blades and I doubt they will on the MUTT either!

nb. wiper arms are made from sprung steel and welding them will negate this, however I don't consider this a problem when they are used against flat glass.

ps. when the screen is folded down the wiper arms vibrate against the bonnet hinges. It's very annoying :x

I did the tracking today and now the wheels are pointing somewhere near the right place. I also test-fitted the vinyl top which was quite easy to fit. I had to squeeze the windscreen runner a bit to stop it pulling out. At the other end, someone said they'd fitted a spacer to bring the spare wheel out a bit from the body - was that welded on or is it just held captive in position?

Rear diff is very noisy. I now have something to compare against when I try the rubber washer install!

MoT on Saturday morning so fingers crossed!

Hey Mike, There are two adjustment bolts on the e-brake band that keep it round and not touching the drum. Make sure the clonk in the rear end is not the diff coming loose from the body. Looks good. Pull your throttle cable out a little to about 1500 rpm and spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifold and listen for any change. Especially get the spray under the manifold by the firewall, This will tell if you have a manifold leak that could be causing your carb to run lean.

That was me that did that modification. It is 3/8 inch thick and is held captive. I put it on so that the spare tire would not pinch the top. I scribed a circle with a compass the 5 and 1/4 inches in diameter and drilled a hole in the center for the bolt that holds it on. Any larger diameter and it will not fit between the center mounting bolt and the guide stud on the side.

Thanks for the info about there spare wheel spacer. That's a good way of doing it. I was imagining a carefully machined part which would be pressed onto the outside of the circle on the rear panel. Trust an engineer to come up with a complex solution to a simple problem :lol:

And Ralph, your award is quite safe - this MUTT is not staying clean for long - I'm taking it over the off-road course at a local private show I'm organising on the 2nd/3rd June - mud and all.

The 151 is looking very good.
Have you decided what unit markings you are going to put on it?
Any other info on the Aribic unit markings?

I have a USMC tub that I will be putting together and it has a spare tire extension welded on it. I'm sure it was done by the USMC as it is an un-molested tub. I will take a photo of it when I get home and send it to you.

I will be at the Hop Farm this year too. I will buy you a Pint!

This thing is great fun to drive. There's clearly no point in using 1st gear except on the steepest of uphill starts. It goes like a bat out of h£ll but there is a definite unhappiness with the carb. I might try repairing my old one using parts from the new. The seat canvas still hasn't arrived so I strapped some old sofa cushions on which gave the tester a laugh! I had a sheet of 10mm rubber on the wrecker which fits the rear floor perfectly and hugely cuts down the noise from the rear. Steering is a bit vague and the gears are never in the same place twice, but boy what a fun vehicle! Now I have to jump through the bureaucratic hoops to register it so I can play properly.

Emmett - I'll look forward to meeting you at W&P. We should have a MUTT gathering for a photo one evening.

As regards markings: I'm going to get them done on magnetic material so I can pick and choose. I'll get the arabic ones done and maybe someone will recognise them. I'm also going to cut out some inverted 'V's for sandpit 1 (I know they probably weren't used there in those markings but it's poetic license for the group I belong to and few people will know anyway.)
