Fuel Mess

Post by Ray Barth » Fri Apr 21, 2017 6:31 am

G'day MUTT experts,
After sitting for a couple of months, my '67 A1 has a fuel problem. It will start ok then the pump starts ticking like mad and floods out the carb and pours gas out of the carb ! At first I thought a stuck float. had the carb rebuilt by The expert . Still pours gas out the carb. I hooked up a small gas can and it starts right up and runs beautiful. Hooked the fuel line back up and pump starts ticking like crazy pouring gas out of the carb again like a garden hose.. I pulled the pump out, cleaned the filter, tank is clean, pump shows no sign of dirt or anything. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON ????

maybe the fuel pump pressure is too high, try another fuel pump, but I see Rickf gave you the answer

Were you able to fix this yet? Sounds like the float needle is stuck open or there is a hole in the float and its full of fuel....

How about checking if the return line to the tank is clogged by dried up Ethanol fuel. If it can't go in the carb it's supposed to return to the tank, if it can't do either, it will push out wherever it can go.
The return line (sold to me) was the identical part number as the brake line, which strikes me as odd, but it may be old and clogged. Remove the carb end hose, open the fuel tank, and apply air to the carb end of the hose to see if you hear air rushing our the fuel tank.

PS: I keep saying two to three weeks is max time for a sitting MUTT with ethanol to gum up the carb, even a newly rebuilt one, use StarTron (blue additive) as a minimum!

Thanks Wigget, this carb has no return line. I'm still working on it. Getting ready to give it away for .10 cents if i can't get it going. (just kidding, do not send .10 cents)

Will, You can plug that line with no ill effects at all, done it many times. Two of my vehicles with those carbs that way have gone the distance on the cross country convoys with no problems. One of them twice. All that bypass is is a small orifice hole in the fitting leading to the bypass hose. If you plug it all it does is send the gas to the bowl and if the bowl is full it just stops the fuel flow like any normal vehicle, the diaphragm in the pump just does not get pushed down by the spring until the needle in the carb opens.
