What year did A2s start production?
Just bought a M151A2, with only a few pictures that is titled as a 1969 and the data plate also reads 1969. Did they start producing them in 68 or 69? My knowledge is mostly centered around the straight M151s.
Thanks
Jason
Thanks

Re: What year did A2s start production?
Jason, I have a photo of a Ford A2 undergoing evaluation tests and it has a 1968 US Army registration number. My understanding is that a batch was built prior to Jan 1970 but was not formally approved by the Mil until that date.Austringer wrote:Just bought a M151A2, with only a few pictures that is titled as a 1969 and the data plate also reads 1969. If yours is definitely a 1969-dated vehicle, I'd really like to see a pic of it, along with pics of the dashplate/BUDD plate for my research.
Thanks....

I haven't seen it yet, but the seller is an honest person as I've delt with him on numerous occassions. the only thing I don't like about this A2 is that it has ROPS installed
He says it's a 69 according the dataplate.
Jason
I should have some pictures tonight.

Re: What year did A2s start production?
Hi Jason,
don't build your hopes up too much. I'll bet that this is an AMG-built A2 with a faked dashplate or one from a final-production M151A1.
I've never yet seen an A2 plate with a 1969 date on it.
ps... Don't forget that all Ford A2s had a contract date showing "68". But none were adopted by the Mil until 1970.
I'd love to be proven wrong
kind regards as always....

Re: What year did A2s start production?
Don't know if this will help or muddy the waters further but I have an Army fact sheet from a wheeled vehicles study that lists the total number of US 1/4 trucks ever made. It shows that Ford was awarded contract DAAEO6-68-C-0001 on 26 Sep 67. There is a notation that says the contract started as M-151A1's and ended as M-151A2's. Total production was 49,377. Then AM General was awarded the next contract on 16 Feb 71, DAAEO7-C-0103, which produced 34,984 vehicles. The total number of all 1/4 trucks made came to 1,030,845.

Re: What year did A2s start production?
Kevin, I was just about to post here saying "nothing ever came of this" when my good friend Rick pointed out this post by x-cal.....see here:-Star Electric Ordnance wrote:Did anyone ever get a final answer on this? Kevin.

Is this the same vehicle that Jason (Austringer) talked about? Hopefully, x-cal will post some photos which may verify the story.

Ken, Well, an old looking date plate should tell the tale. I can look up the contract date again and see where it falls. Kevin.
